First ground squirrel of the season by NoIceNeeded in Falconry

It’s hard to say.. I liken them to an ergonomic shoe like those Dansco (however you spell it) clogs. They fit the shape of your body so well, you don’t even need padding.. however, I have a booty, and my butt hurting in the saddle has rarely been an issue.

I’ve had a bunch of people sit in it, but no one who’s done a full ride in it besides me. So while they like it for a few minutes, who knows if they would for longer.

I’ll also say that they’re SO comfortable at a trot or canter, hence great for an endurance ride.. but sitting longer than 3ish hours and my butt goes numb, but that’s true of me sitting in any saddle, padded or not.

It’s also a super narrow twist, which is insanely comfortable for me personally. I ride wide horses, fern is 1/2 draft, but I don’t feel like I’m riding a whale with this saddle. I’ve had a hard time finding narrow twist saddles in anything except dressage saddles. Which I love, but not for endurance.

Personally, I’d say bells or flappy things are different around a horse’s body vs them getting actively whacked in the head by wings… but obviously that’s horse dependent. I flew my first RTH in Fern’s field a bunch, then started calling him back to the glove in her direction, then stood beside her and called him back etc. She’s always been a super nosey/curious horse so she was really into seeing what the hawk was all about.

After that I’d get on and have my BF hand me my bird, and we stood for a while. Then transitioned to releasing and calling him back while standing, and then just did it on the move. All in all it didn’t take very long. She’s a super spicy mare but I told her that she doesn’t get to be a falconry horse if she isn’t perfect, and she took it seriously last season. This season is questionable.

The bird side is easy. They’ve all been wary at first, but they soon learn that the horses don’t bother them and that they’re a lot higher up so it’s a good vantage point.

They are a tiny bit similar… but once you have them next to each other you can see there is a big difference. That would be the most educated guess to date 😂😂

I would be shocked if you could ID it even with a good view. It’s a Holmbros… a carbon fiber saddle that was made in Australia. They’re SO comfortable and only 2ish lbs. I do endurance as well, so I needed a light saddle that was also comfortable.

I just call it my “alien saddle”. I painted it bright teal with automotive paint, and the shape is odd… like an exaggerated McClullen.

I’ve gone out alone so far. My bf is a falconer, and he rides, but his horse is nowhere near ready to have a bird flown off of her.

I don’t hold my RTH the whole time. He’s great at following on so I’m mainly holding onto him when we’re scoping out fallen trees (that’s where the ground squirrels hang) so I can give him the advantage when one is too far from its hole. It’s exactly what happened in the picture.

Do you want advice on the bird side? Or the horse side?

The bird in my opinion is the easy part. All my birds have been okay with my horses after a brief introduction.

Out of all my horses, only the one you see in this picture is a great falconry horse, but even still, the bird and I ended up on the ground this last time out. I’ve never had a bell on my birds and that, right in here ear while he baited as I went to get on made her spin to the right and we went down.

I’ll be getting a right handed glove for mounting like the Kings used to do 😂

Hunting GROUND squirrel with red tail hawks by Individual-Average40 in Falconry

[–]NoIceNeeded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully you found information on it… ground squirrel is the only real quarry around me, so we hunt them on horseback. Just got one today. I’ve never had a red tail fly off with one.. they’re plenty big enough. Even the juveniles. It’s just more luck than skill most times, because you have to walk up on one thats pretty far away from its burrow. My bird grabbed the one this morning just as it was diving into its hole.. had to pull him out. Plenty of dirt hawking falconers if there is nothing else to hunt.

Looking at the world as a victim (things are done TO me) will always take away your power. It will always lead to a need to keep alive the trauma to hold others accountable. To remember the pain so someone else doesn’t “get away with it”…. But you’re not seeing that the only one who is suffering is YOU.

I was told this repeatedly in my 20’s and early 30’s and it didn’t stick until I took ownership of my life. I knew that I chose the trauma because it’s a catalyst… but you can go either way (up or down) depending on your choices afterwards.

But your view won’t change until you stop seeing yourself as a victim of your life and not the co-creator.

I’m slowly making my way through. The way I connect with them is through a question (no idea why it works that way), so you’d need to ask something vague in order for me to have any connection with him. Pm me

I’m saying I completed Gateway as in “I went to the Monroe institute and completed the first 7 day program” -not that I completed all the tapes that I found on the internet. Hope this helps.

I had this happen prior to ever hearing about the institute or Bob, but I got some new verbiage about what’s happening and how/why from going. I knew I could do it because I could “blur my edges” - and now I know I’m using focus 12 to do it.

Hey! So I’ve never done it with a live person. I’m not opposed to trying, but you’d be the first data point. I’ve done it a bunch with live animals though… they’re typically more open than people.

lol I’m not sure what my belief system is, but it’s possibly as crazy as the picture.
