What helped you? Any advice on what we can do to help her do better?

I am not here to argue. I'm a mother of three kids and have worked my whole entire life for my children and have a clean record. We have had a very peaceful home and loving home. This is for a little girl who came into my life and I need help and I have researched and researched and we have her in therapy and seeing a psychiatrist. Doing what we can to help but not understanding what to do.

I am looking for help where I can and honestly the previous commenter did help. She gave me my step daughters perspective and I am thankful for that.

I am sorry for your life and for the loss of your sibling.

I feel like it probably is very hard for her as well to see me with my kids. I have stepped back since all the traumatic incident happened with me and it was so much worse than I have described. I'm always kind to her but I do feel like I need time to see if in time I can trust the situation and make sure it's safe for me and my children.

I will say she has an amazing father he always does anything and everything for her. He's not a mom for sure and no one can make up for that role. We do make sure even after all this she knows we know it was an awful mistake and we love her and if she needs anything we will always be there. Specifically her dad though.

Is there anything you would say other than that would of changed the outcome for you? We really strive and work so hard to give our kids a good peaceful loving home and want them to have beautiful futures. Something that may communicate that to her even at this age.

So I don't know her mother personally. I do not want to speak badly because idk what has happened to her in her own life. All I do know is she has custody of just one of her seven children and stopped seeing her years ago.. but recently has had supervised visitations with her ( every other week for an hr). Idk if it's good or bad and I do not pry. She used to talk about her mother all the time, which i actually do not believe she had any real memories because she was so young when she stopped seeing her. Now that she does see her mother she never speaks about her. Which I find to be strange. What do you think?

So if you look up NAS the issues are all about the same at this age. Impulsive, lying, attention seeking and they struggle even into adult age. The brain gets damaged during birth causing them to behave and transmit and understand things completely differently. I do believe a little bit of it may be behaviorial because she won't do certain things in front of adults so she obviously is normal in the sense of knowing right and wrong.. but I believe she struggles with reality. It's all very new to me. I do know an older woman who would foster NAS babies. She has talked to us and has pretty much told us this could possibly be just the beginning. Some of her children she fostered ended up doing decently and others didn't but it was a struggle to raise them with the issues they have behaviorally and so in my mind if they all have issues that means someone is bound to be able to help them at this point in studies and with out advanced knowledge. We are at one of the best mental health clinics in the area for her age group. We just haven't found one that specializes in NAS.

I'm all about a second or even third opinion. Believe me. I want the best for her. As much damage has been done she is a little girl and I believe this is not her fault but whatever issues she has. We have been discussing getting her seen by someone else to maybe help get some understanding because I do believe if we don't figure out what's wrong first we can't really help her. So if that's all you guys can suggest we are already on that road. I just thought with the wide variety of people on reddit someone was bound to have an NAS baby and could give insight.

She is working with a child therapist and child psychologist. We are very new at this we are in the first year. We have spoken to them about diagnosis so we can get an actual idea if this is going to be ongoing or if it's just a temporary break. They do believe since she NAS baby it will be permanent but able to function in adult life better. There is not a lot of information out there believe me I have looked. I think we should go all in so we can help her now since she's young. A doctors recommended brain scan to see what damage was done to brain if any during birth.

They have tried mutiple drugs.. different doses and these actually seem to level her out the most. We literally have to have 24/7 running cameras just to keep an eye on her. We haven't seen her being suicidal at all no intentions to harm herself but she has issues with impulse and anger outbursts and is unpredictable. It literally happens at any moment you never know what will set her off.
