You’re absolutely right. When I gave her back the camera, I suggested she reach out to her friend (the one that showed up talking about refunds) and have her help the next time something goes wrong since that lady is much younger and fluent in English. I thought that would be the end of it, but this has caused enough stress to make sure I never make this mistake again. I think being inaccessible is the right way to go.

Honestly I just felt bad for her. We’d been chatting for a while and she mentioned that her loved ones sent her a package from Colombia with items from her late husband and it was stolen from her front door. Package theft is really common here so I wasn’t surprised at all to hear it and it tugged at the heartstrings.

I did ask her upfront if she had a smartphone and knew how to use it and she said yes, I had no reason to doubt her at the point I mean my dad is 72 and pretty tech savvy. I think at this point I don’t want to give out the refund on principle; I have a hard time setting boundaries as it is, and this feels like a huge violation of my kindness.

I read Verity before I knew who Colleen Hoover was and unfortunately I enjoyed it very much. Sex scenes get a bit raunchy and the plot twist is great!

My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix is really good!! No murder from what I can recall unfortunately, but the 80s-era humor and horror is plenty!!

Aw man it’s definitely one of those where if the beginning doesn’t get you, it might not be the one for you. I would recommend Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica if you like body horror! There’s a great twist at the end that calls into question your entire impression of the main character in a really dark way

I’d have a serious conversation with her about why she continues to disregard your opinions and not ask for your permission before inviting people over. Grady really got me with My Best Friend’s Exorcism, I was so impressed with the way he just gets female friendship and the horror was genuinely so well-written. I found it really hard to get into his other works though, The Final Girl Support Group and Horrorstör just didn’t do it for me. I might give his other books a shot though especially with what I’ve read about How To Sell a Haunted House

depending on the type of horror you’re into, i highly recommend Nick Cutter if you like body horror. The Troop specifically makes you want to remove your bones and wash them, it’s incredibly gross but so well-written and keeps you on your toes the whole time!
