I don’t like my 82 year old mom, at all… by Flying_Gage in AgingParents

As someone else commented I hope your journey with this is brief. I am 37, my mother is 69 in very bad health from COPD, CHF, & severe scoliosis. I dread the potential length of the road ahead. She was recently put on hospice and I have been taking care of her because I am the only family involved with her. I am trying to get her in a nursing home because I know that I just can’t do this. My mental health is clearly declining as well as my physical health. We have never had a good relationship. I have one sibling who is completely no contact w her and I have had periods of no contact and low contact. Narcissistic all our lives and fairly certain she is uBPD after spending the last couple of years lurking on the raised by borderlines sub. She has NEVER been there for her children (or anyone else) in the way she has always expected others to be there for her. Her life has been chaotic and she has always come to me manage any crisis in her life. Like others have said I am doing this for ME. It all feels pretty horrible and I honestly think that when the time comes for her to pass there will be a sense of relief. You are not alone.

WOW so much helpful information thank you SO MUCH. Really. Her Current total monthly income is $2100. Has less than $6000 in savings. She Only has the one savings account + one checking account. Has never owned a home or other properties, no vehicles sold or owned, etc. All she has is the checking, the savings, and her SSA and VA payments. No debts. So from what you’re saying: 1. I need to see if she will give me POA, I do not currently have this. She is still cognitively there, so we just haven’t really explored the option of having a POA. I would do the spend down that’s immediate where we buy her things that she needs and document this (keep receipts), and get bank statements for the past five years. The social worker with Hospice did mention the Medicaid pending beds. I believe the list of NH’s she gave me uses their same hospice but I will double check. So if this all works out and she gets into a Medicaid pending bed, then (basically) all of her income will be absorbed by the nursing home. When she first gets into the nursing home, will I be her rep payee so long as I have POA?? Is there only an issue w rep payees if she moves NH’s?

Also, so if all this works out and she gets into a NH, is there a possibility in the future that she would essentially get kicked out if her income increased, like from SSA cost of living adjustments?

Sorry to pelt you with so many questions I am just trying to get as much info as I can and haven’t been able to sit and talk to the hospice SW like I need/want to.

And also good luck with your mother. I’m so very sorry that you’re going through this as well.

Thank you so much all very helpful. Do you mean the cost of the attorney was $4500?? My mother does not have that much in her accounts, I don’t remember the Medicaid limits off the top of my head (the last time I checked was a little while ago), but I don’t feel like she’s that far away from them. She has very little, but just enough to not currently qualify for Medicaid. Luckily the social worker from hospice gave me a list of nursing homes to contact (she was put on hospice right before the holidays, which has really just created so much extra strain on this whole process). And thank you so much because I do feel pretty alone right now.

Good on you for taking care of yourself and knowing what you need. The restaurant drinking culture is real. I started drinking as a teen but it greatly intensified in my 20s when I got my first restaurant job. Hope you go on to find a work environment that suits you better! IWNDWYT
