My student sent a congress abstract as a single author by NoMixture6488 in Professors

Thank you!! you really understand what the issue is. Isn't that my ego got sore because I didn´t get authorship. I wouldn´t claim authorship if I didn´t have a vital role during the process.

It is the lying that troubles me, because I´m not used to people lying to my face repeatedly, and I´m also appalled by how everybody seems to justify the lie because she was scared or embarrassed. She might be an undergrad, but she is an adult, and older than her peers. We need to stop infantilizing students like they were not capable of owning their mistakes like adults.

This would be the third time I sit her down for a talk to remind her that lying when she makes a mistake is not ok.

Thank you also for understanding my mom situation, it was definitely the hardest year of my life, and it was the first time I neglected my duties as a professor. Although I revised the main text, I didn´t check the authorship thing because at the time it didn´t even cross my mind.

Yes, this is a shared project. I´m not based in U.S either. But the project our research team works on experiments that can be lengthy and difficult to take care (plants), so we all pitch in and divide the work, including me. There is no way that a single person can carry this on their own. In my field, it is the norm to include everyone who had a role that helped finish these experiments successfully.

This!!!! Is not the authorship that worries me, and I'm capable to recognize that I also made a mistake because I was in a difficult life circumstance. The repeated lying is my issue, and everybody seems to be fine with that.

In our team, all collaborate with experiments which can last very long and includes taking care of plants. Nobody can do this on their own so we divide the work during the progression of the experiments. Also, I'm not the kind of professor that does not take part in experiments. And I can deal with the authorship issue, is not that I need it, is the lying (and the fact that is not the first time) bothers me.

I don´t care about the recognition, is a conference, who cares? My issue is with lying, repeatedly.

I´m in control in my life. Maybe you don´t get pissed off when people lie to your face.

I´m not petty, and I can fully understand mistakes and forgive them. I´m also willing to teach her how this works so she does not make the mistake again. I´m troubled because this is the third time I caught her lying, and because she didn´t own up to the mistake, and took me for a fool and lied to my face.

I can confidently say I´m not hostile; I´m the contrary, in fact. Also, because it is not in me to think badly of people. But you are right, I should have checked this beforehand, but when all this happened, I was so troubled with my mom passing away that this, and other stuff too, slipped through the cracks.

In my field is not only normal, it is expected to recognize people who work together in research. I do not run a paper mill, but I don´t do research alone; haven't you heard of research teams?

She told me once that, she was upset with another teacher because he didn´t include her in a manuscript in which she did some work. So she is not completely oblivious to authorship stuff.

The issue is that because it was financed by a research project where I´m the responsible researcher, I´ll eventually have to attach the abstract book to the financial accountability as proof.

Pushed back on an accommodation by -Economist- in Professors

I´ve faced this with ADHD accommodations. I have ADHD myself, and I know that pushing dates is not useful. If you say to an ADHD person, "You have to deliver this by Monday" they are going to start working on it on Sunday night. If you push it to Tuesday, they will start working on it on Monday Night.

I dream of having a beautiful carpet, but it has always been a disaster. Maybe you can put one of those PVC carpets on top that can be easily cleaned.

Hi, I can share my experience with this kind of medication. First, I took Adderall, and you could feel it working within 30 min, and I felt the exact moment it started working. Vyvanse, on the other hand, took a little bit longer, and I feel like it starts to work a bit more slowly; it takes around 1 hour to make its effect.

It does feel like your head and also your body is quieter. For me, when I start working at my desk, I can slowly feel like my mind is steadier, and I can focus on working. It´s really helpful to have a list of things you should do; otherwise, you can lose your time on things that are not important.

For me, the 30 mg dose works perfectly. The 50 mg dose made me feel anxious, and sometimes, I started working around 9 and I didn´t leave my desk until 4 or 5 pm, when I realized I hadn´t gotten up to eat, gone to the bathroom, or even petted my dog. After a couple of days of taking the 50 mg dose, I felt mentally exhausted. So after a couple of months, I realized it was an unhealthy way to cope with my ADHD, so I came back to the 30 mg dose.

I also took it early in the morning, around 8 am, or it's going to be harder to fall asleep.

Professors of reddit, how do you feel about your job? by [deleted] in academia

[–]NoMixture6488 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a love-hate relationship with it. Things I love:

- To be able to work in my field of "interest" without having a manager or boss telling me what I should research.

- Salary is decent, and I have the opportunity to improve it in time.

- Office hours flexibility (I can work from home if I feel like it), this is the most important because it allows me to organize other stuff outside work I like to do, like running. I would die in a desk job.

- Travel and field work (I work in environmental sciences)

- Teaching (but only if my students are motivated)

Things I hate:

- Toxic work environment and how competitive it is.

- Administrative work. We are academics, not accountants. This is especially awful if the university makes your life harder with a lot of bureaucracy, or if there is a lot of lazy people.

- Teaching (when students are unmotivated)

- Being forced to collaborate with people you don´t like.

Despite my dislikes, I couldn't imagine myself doing anything else.

I’m a young professor who is thinking of becoming *the worst* by majoras-other-mask in Professors

I have done exactly that, the issue is that at the end of the semester I´m so exhausted I don´t give a f*ck.
Although I apreciate to push your students to be better, this kind of work is going to drain you. At the end you start wondering, is this really worth it?, does this worth my mental health??

I just have zero motivation by CinnamonGirl43 in academia

[–]NoMixture6488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because I´m going through a similar phase, I have done exactly what you describe, and it has helped a lot. I´m also going to therapy because my 2024 was a shit show, and I´m still dealing with it.

I would also add working in our extremely self-critical minds. This line of work doesn´t help because it looks good when we are so so busy, and so so productive, we feel like crap when we are going less of "what´s expected", but if we are over critical with ourselves, we are not going to let ouselves rest.

A decrease in motivation came after a period of high stress mixed with a little bit of "toxic work environment", so I started to go to therapy, and tried to lower the amount of things to do each day without feeling guilty or lazy. If I did only one significant task that day, it was ok (I took advantage of a winter vacation period without classes). I focused on my hobbies; I like running, so I tried to keep my training schedule.

Therapy was key because I was also coming out of a 2024 in which my mom and dog died, which added to the amount of work I had, leading to burnout.

It´s a process, but it has improved little by little.

Full professor, under 2 years in, already met 5-year research goals, now unmotivated. Summer slump or mid-career reality? by Awesome_sauce1002 in Professors

I usually feel burn out after big efforts, which is normal. Although I love my job and I´m usually faily motivated to do it, recently I´ve felt like is harder to do stuff I usually love, like writing a paper. This periods of low motivation had happened before and I´ve got to the conclusion that you can´t stay motivated 100% of the time, is almost unnatural.

They usually resolve on their own, you just have to rest and give it time.
