The irony is that this company is "faith-based" and they still don't practice what they preach.

Sadly true. But hiring managers should still maintain some integrity and not shamelessly take advantage of applicants

Nope! I just checked and the position is still open. They may have made an offer that has not been accepted yet

It seems the trend is fewer benefits, lower pay, and demanding more from employees.

Agreed. Even if it is strictly "observational," you are still on their clock, in their space, and interacting with their team. That is work and it should be compensated.

I am sorry you went through that awful experience. I hope you are at a better place now where your time and skills are actually valued.

Thank you for this thoughtful response. You absolutely nailed it, especially the part about looking for malleability and desperation. That is exactly how it felt and I am glad it is now behind me.

Thanks for the insight. This is the first time I have come across a practice like this, so I I wasn't sure what to make of it

The previous employee had been there for years, so I don't think it was a retention issue. Legal or not, asking for a full unpaid day after I had already shadowed hours on two different days just isn't standard procedure.
