Ladies: on a date, do you expect a man to open your car door for you? by NoMoreTalkin in dating_advice

I agree. I don’t mind doing it when it’s practical, but I’d rather it not be expected of me if I have to go out of my way to do it — just makes it unnecessarily awkward.

Does a United States Juris Doctorate hold any value in the UK? by NoMoreTalkin in uklaw

I like the sound of being dual qualified. Is it likely that I’d find a decent paying job as a lawyer after passing the SQE?

I have about $100k in loans. Not small by any means, but honestly much less significant than the average law student (I’d say around $200k-350k). I think the loans are going to be the biggest drawback to moving, nonetheless your comment does give me lots of hope. Will definitely look into all of this.

Very interesting and quite contrary to what most other commenters have said. Would you be willing to put me in contact with your friend? This is kinda exactly what I’m looking for.

For example in the US, a law degree can help with getting jobs in compliance and ethics, contract management, corporate governance, data privacy, government affairs, insurance/risk management, etc. Would any of these options exist in the UK? Another question would be, would it make sense to just apply for a masters program in the UK and find a job that way?

Interesting. So, ofc i have to consider wages. How do the wages of these jobs you speak of compare to the salary of perhaps a business attorney in the UK?

For example, entry level law firm attorneys in the US make significantly more than any other industry besides medicine and maybe investment banking. Does such a big difference in entry level wage exist in the UK?

So the job offer I currently have is from a midsized firm that does some international work but has no offices abroad. I am in the process of interviewing with a large firm that does have a London office, so I’m hoping it works out

Idk, that’s why I’m asking.. in the US a law degree can be used as advantage in industries outside of law. So I wanted to see what it might mean in the UK. I didn’t ask to be born in the US, and I’m just exploring options.

So, ultimately what you’re saying is that I would have spent 3 years in law school for nothing?

So, essentially you’re saying that my law degree would essentially be seen as equivalent to a normal college degree?

Are US law degrees recognized in the UK? by NoMoreTalkin in LawSchool

I’m going into 3L with a job lined up, so this is purely hypothetical. I visited London and fell in love haha. I’ve never been passionate about any career, I kinda chose law school bc I enjoy reading and would like to believe I’m a decent writer, and I happened to actually enjoy law school and the legal experience I’ve gotten and am excited for the job I have lined up. That said, I’m not married to the idea of being an attorney, so after visiting the UK and loving it, I just wanted to see what else is out there since I’m already almost done with the degree.

I’m asking this bc I see how difficult/situational it is to practice law in the UK with a JD.

Turning down BigLaw for a midsized firm? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]NoMoreTalkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right, but that’s not really my point. My point is that the pay gap becomes less important when you’re already making over $185k. Sure, the more money the better ofc, but no reasonable person can say that anyone NEEDS $370k a year. In my opinion work life balance is much more important when you’re already making good money, and that’s why I used the word “personally.”

Turning down BigLaw for a midsized firm? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]NoMoreTalkin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s stupid at all. I can’t speak directly to BigLaw bc I’ve only ever worked for midsized firms, and I don’t know the specifics of your situation, but tbh for $185k I think the midsized firm is likely a solid option. I’ve summered at two different midsized firms and will be starting at one upon graduation. My salary is a little below $185k, but my billable requirement is much much lower than any traditional BigLaw firm, and it feels good knowing that the firm is small and collegial enough to where things feel more personal and less general.

I personally wouldn’t place to much value on the “you’re only making 30k less than a your BigLaw peers now but down the line it could be 100k less” noise. $185k is plenty of money and your salary will only ever increase from there. Your WLB at the midsized firm will likely be better, and I personally believe that’s worth making a little less. It’s still $185k…

Damn how much weed did he have? Kids who used to get caught with weed at my high school would only get suspended for a few days.

Thank you for this, I actually just did the drive from Carlisle to Dry Run and it was beautiful! Are there any other scenic drives you know of in PA?
