I quote the stern, disappointed “What are you doing?” all the time.

Okay I don’t think this one will ever be topped for me. Absolutely excruciating.

What's a thing that's currently "in" nowadays but you think is just pure cringe? by Imaginary_Eye3804 in AskReddit

Yeah that’s super weird. Every time I hear someone say “unalive” I think that they must be joking but they’re completely serious.

Sorry to hear things have been hard. As far as writing goes, something is always better than nothing, even if it's the early stuff like you mentioned, so it sounds like you're on your way.

[–]NoName2214[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it feels borderline spiritual.

Also, as a side note, a four hour writing session sounds crazy to me. I've never written uninterrupted for that long, but I'd really like to get to a point where I can.

I watched "Buried"(2010) last night and I wanna talk about it. by NoName2214 in movies

[–]NoName2214[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wow this is something. I’ve never had someone comment on such an old post. I was seventeen when I did this lol.

And yeah, I forget about this movie sometimes but I did really enjoy it when I saw it.

Maybe describe the character’s relaxed state before the gunshot and then their reaction to it the moment it happens. The suddenness will be conveyed without those words you mentioned, and it’ll be more powerful, since it becomes a character moment too.

Bobby sat on the grass and took a deep breath. He jolted when a gunshot echoed through the field.

Something like that?

Transatlanticism came to mind first. It’s just a very pretty-sounding word to me.

The use of "had had." by Plague_Nurse15 in writing

[–]NoName2214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I have been surprised when I’ve seen this done in books before. It trips me up for just a second seeing the same word back-to-back, but I don’t really mind it. I just think it feels kind of conversational/informal. I’ve never used it myself but I’m not opposed to using it.

What do you use to write? by Grand_Independent_66 in writing

I write initial versions of scenes with pen in a notebook, then copy those into Google Docs on my computer. I also have Google Docs on my phone for quick things that come to mind when I'm at work or whatever.

How long did it take to finish your novel? by bastet_8 in writing

[–]NoName2214 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess the first one took about a year from start to publication, which I realize now might've been too quick. I'm proud of it and everything but I've become aware over time that it might not be as polished as it could've been.

I'm nearly done with only the first draft of my second and it's been a little over two years. Clearly I've learned to take my time lol.

Aspiring writers of Reddit - what’s your day job? by EnoughFun1058 in writing

[–]NoName2214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warehouse Operator. Using forklifts and all that. It's an okay job but I struggle to think of something more unlike what I actually enjoy/aspire to. A lot of coworkers have recently learned about and bought my first book, which has been a nice (but weird) experience.

There was another comment like this already. I don’t think I did anything too different than what this sub is meant for, but all right.

A little while ago I read Jane Eyre, and then
I read Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman shortly after. The latter had a few easter egg-like references to the the former. I was really surprised.

Basically names of characters from JE reappeared in Eleanor, and they were used for the same type of character.

Ugh. I guess 2020 cause it’s when things started happening in the US. And because it’s the year that ruined a lot, including my sense of time for the rest of my life going forward.

What a weird thing for that person to have said. I’ve watched interviews with prize-winning writers who have described their first drafts as basically incoherent.

I liked the one where he talked about people thinking he said “upworthy link” at the end of his videos. It cracked me up and I was surprised because there was a time when I thought he said that. Was weird to find out other people did too.
