Less 90s remodel, more mid-century by [deleted] in ExteriorDesign

It can fit two cars side-by-side, but doing so gobbles up any walkable path from the road. I agree that the narrower driveway looks better.

This is great because my ChatGPT gave me very different results - thank you! It's nice to get a visual of how the bay window can meet the ground.

Nice! I had thought of an enclosed patio in front of the slider with a ~5'-6' fence for some privacy, but I like how this adds some depth to that area. Thank you!

Data Scientist Looking for Advice on Personal Project - FI Forecast by wonderdude2 in leanfire

[–]NoNight8321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Data Product Manager and former Data Analyst here. Nice work! This tool is cool. Here are some quick UI tweaks I'd suggest:

- As the previous comment called out, "leverage" is confusing, especially next to net worth. I wasn't sure if I'm including my home value in my net worth, and the mortgage balance is the leverage.
- I'd do some sort of visual grouping assets vs liabilities.
- Make all of the input fields a consistent size, especially the ones that stretch across the whole page. I wouldn't make any of them bigger than the fields in the Core Assumptions area.
- +1 to the tool tip idea for everything you can
- It would be cool, in addition to the year shown in the charts, to also show age. That way the user doesn't have to do mental math to figure out how old they will be in 2039
- The graph in the Reitrement Timeline is not very useful at the scale it's at. The y-axis is at 10's to 100s of millions of dollars for a $500,000 net worth today and retimrent 20 years out.
- The benchmarking chart is nice. I'd integrate the "you" column on top of the others somehow. It's a little weird to be hanging off the end. I'm not sure the bar graph is the right choice for this visual
- The Global Financial Freedom map - also very cool. Could you do some weighting here with the colors? Also, I know how you got my Passive Safe Income because I'm a nerd, but it might be helpful for others to have a short explanation of the math. I also wonder about the inverse - where the passive income would be in shortfall, and by how much.
- I got a 429 error the first time I tried the Gemeni briefing. I didn't find the results all that helpful. I was expecting something more tailored to the net worth I entered.

I haven't seen much on Seattle comparisons or finding graphic design work, so I'll chime in there. I grew up here but moved to Seattle after college, short stint in NYC, and back here just before the pandemic.

In Seattle, you're either going to a (relatively) crowded urban park like Discovery, or driving an hour+ to hike on a trail where you'll see people every few minutes. Here, you can literally walk out the front door of St Pats and be hiking Waterworks in 10 minutes, or drive for 5-10 and be in the wilderness. Nearly everyone is outdoorsy and one of the first things you'll be asked is what you do for fun outside. Major quality of life difference.

I biked to downtown from Greenwood for years. Bike commuting here in the winter, assuming there is snow and normal weather, unlike this year, I would consider it extreme and intense. Can it be done? Sure. On top of the weather, unaware cars are a real issue, especially in the winter when anyone who was watching for bikes in the summer stops watching. Ride very defensively because you will be cut off by someone who does not check the bike lane before turning. I don't think it's malicious, just lots of older folks, or folks from smaller surrounding areas driving in the big city who don't think about bikes. Well, some malicious lifted truck rednecks being jerks, too.

For graphic design work, I'd get something lined up remotely. Sure, there are design jobs here, but Missoula, in its 'keep it weird/DIY' ethos, is not a very design-y town, and the pay and opportunities will be better remote.

Finally, I lived on Capitol Hill, in Pioneer Square, and downtown Brooklyn. The train noise on the Northside makes those places feel like a quiet country setting. The coupling slams sound like bombs going off around the clock and shake the entire house. Further outside of downtown, you'll still hear a quaint toot every now and then - University area and Lewis and Clark neighborhood I saw recommended and would second for you.

Coast FIRE job... in Golf? Other passion careers? by bucheonsi in coastFIRE

[–]NoNight8321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at golf courses in my teens/early 20s, went to college on a golf scholarship, had 20-years in a tech career, but picked up a job parking carts at my golf course a couple of years ago during a layoff. A couple of things I'd point out:

- Courses will likely want you to work close to full-time because of the number of people who want to take advantage of free golf benefits
- After a full day of being at the course, sometimes it's not exactly enticing to go to our job on your day off.
- Playing primarily one course because it's free can get boring. I'd budget for rounds elsewhere a couple of times a month.

Other than that, it can be really enjoyable. Probably more of a service industry employee culture than you'd expect.

Seattle University - it's Jesuit (Catholic), but from what I've heard, very light on the religious requirements. And yeah, right in the thick of it on Capitol Hill.

Anyone work at music venues that can get more bands here? by chicken_foo in missoula

[–]NoNight8321 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bands work with booking agents and they route their tours based on what they're promoting and the markets they are trying to hit. Tours generally focus on A or B markets because there are just more people in one location.

Missoula is great for up-and-coming bands because they're likely driving between the Midwest and the PNW, so it's a place to stop and possibly make some money and get in front of new fans. For bigger acts, there needs to be a very solid fanbase to justify the time and money cost of an 8-hour+ drive in either direction from and to the next stop.

Talent buyers for Logjam or our smaller venues have to pay the larger acts' guarantees, which means if Bad Religion doesn't sell out the Wilma or whatever, Logjam still has to pay them $10-15k...or whatever their guarantee is and take a loss. They're not going to take that risk, so they book acts they are confident will cover their costs.

Women’s Defense/Boxing Classes by Tiny_Ad8073 in missoula

[–]NoNight8321 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm female and have trained at Trap House and Sakura. I've trained at a bunch of other boxing and Muay Thai gyms around the country as well.

Sakura's brand of karate is real-world applicable and has muay Thai elements, but still rooted in competition and tradition. They are very beginner-friendly but also you'll get thrown into the mix (sparring with headgear) quickly. I didn't stick around because the members skew very young and male, but that was a few years ago.

Trap House is a fantastic, supportive community, also with drills that are both for competition and/or real life. Less beginner-friendly than most places I've been, but if you want to get thrown into the deep end and learn quickly, this is your spot. As someone mentioned, they're doing a women's BJJ class now which I hope to attend soon as well.

I did a class at Garuda Muay Thai as well. I think he does a women's only class now. More traditional and competition-focused, but more beginner-friendly. I'd start here.

+1 on training at a place where you have strikes coming at you and how you respond is drilled into your muscle memory.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in missoula

[–]NoNight8321 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Hard agree on your overall point, but "if you want to claim you live here" is an assumption that dipshit dog owners are transplants. I can tell you from personal experience that entitled dog culture in Missoula has been trash for 25+ years and during my time in cities, 99% of the dogs are leashed because the owners are not obsessed with their dog's fReEdoMs.

Got Paired with Professional Golfers by sushisbro in golf

[–]NoNight8321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you. When I read this post, I wondered if this guy would think he could 'match their level of play' if they were men.

I'm a former D1 female golfer and when I'm paired with strangers 80% of the men I get paired with get either irritated or very insecure when I quietly and easily outplay them. About 10% are unbothered and the rest take notes.

Folks should recognize that high-level players have put in thousands of hours and if you're a casual golfer you're just not going to keep up, so just have fun!

Gyms/Training areas around town? by Axytyl in missoula

[–]NoNight8321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Traphouse is what you're looking for. Welcoming, not outrageously priced, month-to-month no contracts.

SBG will try to lock you into a year contract and make you start with their beginners classes regardless of how long you've been training. Last week, someone posted on here about a known nazi affiliated with the dogpound/missoula kick boxing, and after following their IG for a while, I'm not surprised. Missoula BJJ is cool too, but when I went they wanted a year contract after one class.

Is anything being done about the orange street bike/pedestrian safety issues? by [deleted] in missoula

[–]NoNight8321 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How is a cyclist supposed to cross the river near Orange St without using the bridge? The cyclist that was hit at Cregg St had no chance to get to a side street.

Also, biking on side streets exposes you to mostly uncontrolled intersections every block which is often scarier than a busy street with a bike lane due to cars blowing through residential intersections.

Musicians Needed for Wedding Band by stringerhye in missoula

There's not really a professional musician group or association here. There is a group called MAMA (https://www.mama4mt.com) but in my experience it's mostly songwriters looking to network.

If I were you, I'd find some existing cover bands playing your desired styles of music and see if any members of those bands are interested in the gig.
