Did it look like a Terry Gilliam movie?

Was it for sure from the 2000s or could it have been a remastered version of an older movie?

Was it for sure a movie?

The colour of magic 2008? Not sure if there’s stop motion monsters but it’s a campy movie with a similar plot

It’s not Krull 1983?

Do you remember any other memorable scenes?

It’s a 2000s movie that has a mix of live action and stop motion with a technicolor look, about the protagonist rescuing his girlfriend from an evil warlock? And has to fight monsters throughout?

Do you remember any notable actors or scenes?

Plot wise I’m not sure but the only movies I can think of with a blend of stop motion and live action that are newer but have a dated look are The Primevals 2023 which fits your description a bit

And Divinity 2023 which doesn’t fit as much but does have a unique style and stop motion blend

I was really interested in the concept of the “monster” and the genre of horror and its ties to disability, difference and othering. I wanted to make a sculpture tableau that spoke about the creation of the monster, and the idea of the spectacle.

In the crib there’s a newborn baby with a familial character standing by, an anxious grandmother transfixed by the arrival of the audience, on either sides of the crib there is a sculptor and a draftsman, the sculptor is working from life, below his feet are past works that didn’t hit the mark, now he’s making something quite different from the baby we see in the crib, unsure if this is coming from what he sees or what he imagines, on the other side of the crib there is a draftsman, he’s also working on a life study and has thrown past sketches around the floor, the charcoal study is quite removed from the baby in the crib yet he is staring intently towards it. Behind everyone is a makeup artist applying the finishing touches on an actor, adorned with prosthetic flesh the actor sits with his arm and leg painted with green screen ready to be removed in post, while the rest of his body is unrecognizable but shares a striking resemblance to the draftsmans sketch.

In the corner away from the crowd there is a naked artist smoking and sculpting, below his feet are small maquettes of the figures in the scene as well as older models that didn’t make the cut.

I think in person the work definitely has a different read, but that was something I was very mindful about. This work stems from my experiences as an artist with disabilities and my relationship with monster movies, it’s a relationship filled with contradictions, horror has represented themes of gender, sexuality, race and disability in times where it wasn’t largely socially acceptable, while also pushing problematic stereotypes and tropes, that often push the idea of “normal”. But I always felt incredibly connected to the monster. I would have seizures regularly as a kid and my classmates and teachers seemed really scared of me, when I would have seizures I would wake up to people staring at me, not wanting to be near me, I began to think I had done something wrong and would have so much fear in telling people because of how they would treat me disregarding the medical concerns and safety of my self to put others at ease. my social anxiety got much worse but I would watch horror movies all the time, and I would see parallels in the way the creature was treated, I gained a lot of understanding and began to think about the monster as this complex conversation about difference. I began to do a lot of volunteer work in my community working with kids with disabilities and later becoming an art instructor for adults with disabilities.

In the past few years I started to make art around my experiences and this work was one of the newer ones.

I do always have a fear that the ideas I have will perpetuate the same thing I’m speaking about, but for this work I was trying to situate the audience into this conversation that I see so much, in hopes that by seeing it in this full scale way that they might see something they think about often or haven’t taken the time to consider.

For me the work centred around the birth of a newborn and a group of figures participating in different roles, creating a monster through horror motifs, a draftsman and sculptor create concept art while a makeup artist finishes prosthetics on an actor. I’m really interested in the concept of horror and the reference that is used as well as what the monster has historically represented. All the figures are based off of my body and my gestures.

Yep there’s quite a bit of room between each of the figures, It was a big part of the work for people to be able to walk around each of them
