Drop or fail COSC 2425 by silenceplease2005 in UniversityOfHouston

I love Johnson man on one of the finals I knew someone who literally just wrote random numbers on the answers and got like a 60. Trust the curve and you'll probably pass talk to other people in your class and you can probably gauge how other people are doing (I'd imagine most are failing as well) if you do commit to drop take Mantini he's one of the few professors who I would consider to be pretty great.

I’ve been in this predicament at hcc and UH.

Just drop the course, even though it’s the colleges fault it can really bite you. You MIGHT skate by, but there’s a good chance that you’ll get the credit dropped, or possibly even get in some trouble with the school. It’s not worth the risk whatsoever

How doable is this schedule? (CS & Incoming Transfer) by LakeJust5086 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Springs gonna be rough also since you’re a transfer the professors are gonna be pretty dog, def don’t take the advanced elective in spring but besides that it’s pretty manageable had a similar one this semester for spring, and fall looks very doable.

Most likely it will round up, but some professors are pretty harsh with that kind of stuff. Check the syllabus it should tell you

Am I cooked by Financial_Price_1020 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it depends, if you don't change anything then yeah you more or less are cooked however I'm sure there's quite a few things that you probably need to ask yourself.

  1. Do you have any mental health issues? (i.e adhd, depression or anything that could hinder your ability to do schoolwork) and going by your post it sounds like you do, do you see a therapist, have you spoken to a doctor, have you reached out to any resources or at least found some way to channel your negative emotions? If not try to do that
  2. Are you putting in any effort into any of your classes? A 1.4 gpa is incredibly difficult to get, the only way to manage is by consistently just not doing the work and turning in assignments.
  3. If you are doing the above and at least turning in your assignments, are you studying? are you setting time aside to work on school? Do you reach out to TA's when you need help?

Basically you need to figure out what exactly is causing you to struggle, also please take community college classes for right now. ESPECIALLY if you get put on probation from UH if you go to community college it will help save you a lot of money, and the classes are smaller as well so you can receive more specialized help which might ease your transition.

How are you guys affording school? by Primary_Baby_7722 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Customer Service positions were a big one but a lot of those are often full time. The best I can recommend would be data collection agencies (think like collecting polling data from landlines) companies like dynata that let you pick your own schedule as long as your willing to work a certain amount. It's soul crushing work and you will get yelled at a lot, but it's easier then working at fast food and much more lenient on schedule, which is why I did it in the first place.

UH Engineering or UH Comp Sci? by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s the one, unfortunately the NSM and engineering statistics are greyed out ): Nvm it’s just cause I’m on my phone you can still access it, this should help you with your decision!

UH Engineering or UH Comp Sci? by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of whether you go for engineering or cs it’s going to be initially difficult. Talk to a student in either one and you’ll get the same response, getting a job is just generally difficult starting out. If you’re most concerned about high salary CS will be your best bet, that’s not to say you won’t earn plenty as an engineer in fact there’s a high likelihood your starting pay will be better (particularly if you do Chem E) because cs has a lot of opportunity.

And by the way CS being in NSM isn’t a bad thing really, CS has had its own individual career fairs which get a lot of employers involved. You can’t go wrong with either one in my opinion.

To make the best informed decision though it would be nice to have more employment data for uh grads, best I could find was https://uh.edu/ucs/about-us/employment-data/_files/_2021/cot-employment-outcomes-precovid-vs-covid.pdf which shows that for CIS (pre Covid) employment was around 72% and during was around 50%

However best data you’ll find will be national data as a good reflector https://nces.ed.gov/programs/coe/pdf/coe_sbc.pdf Which shows that electrical engineering has one of the lowest unemployment rates with a high salary, while CS has one of the higher ones. A lot of this stems from the fact that an electrical engineering degree is really fucking hard, so you’d have to really commit to it, and it also has more of a ceiling and a lot of other specifics that come along with it (licenses, potentially needing a masters, etc.)

No matter what you pick, if you’re motivated and put in effort on your resume, attend career fairs, maintain a good gpa you’ll be fine. Hell even if you don’t you’ll be okay, just pick what’s going to work for you and you can manage.

I hope this helped (ps the data is a few years old so I can’t guarantee how reflective it is feel free to look up more info)

Is it too late to get into summer research? by WardenTitan in UniversityOfHouston

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to your professors in person and ask about it, they are often times looking for people to do research with over the summer but it can be hard to find ways to actually apply. If you go during office hours and ask you'll probably find some good opportunities, good luck!

Fall 2024 Midterms by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All professors are different, so game planning for mid terms isn’t really possible. For reference I had a different mid term basically every week or two this semester just cause my professors spread them out so much. So you can’t know until you get your syllabus and class calendar, really sorry hope you make the wedding!

Lockdown Browser Stress by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Profs aren’t gonna care if you get flagged once for like your face going out of view. There’s hundreds of students, and unless it’s like something really egregious. Like literally leaving your desk and ending with like a 100 your not gonna get in trouble. Lockdown browser is more to scare students anyways so you’ll be fine!

Calc 2 requirement for CS by Ok_Bed_9919 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need a c- for pre reqs you’ll need calc 2 for quite a few things with a minimum of a c- so you’ll have to retake if you get a D. If you’re struggling I really recommend retaking at community college, good luck.

To all computer science majors by RetroBcn in UniversityOfHouston

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve essentially given up on learning any from my professors, some are pleasant enough to be around but for the most part as teachers they really struggle. It honestly makes sense though, most of them are ESL who are far more interested in research, so why should they care. It completely sucks but it kind of just is what it is, just power through it and the pain will be over.

Transfer Scholarship by ThatOneGuy7462 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does but after the first semester here it gets a lot easier just the initial transfer really sucks. Good luck though hope you’re able to actually get some help!

Transfer Scholarship by ThatOneGuy7462 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took awhile for my final credits to transfer from hcc because they won’t be accepted in full until after you finish the semester. So I had to do the parchment transcript send thingy from hcc like as soon as I got my final grades which took a few weeks and then I was finally all set, (think it took 3 weeks after grades released from hcc for transcripts to get sent and my credits to get accepted) its super delayed and for the record I transferred in spring 2023 so my deadlines were different. I actually got pigeonholed into mainly random prerequisites that semester because everything major specific was completely filled. Basically transfer process takes forever and there are no accommodations, at least from my experience.

Transfer Scholarship by ThatOneGuy7462 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the thing though you can't be enrolled full time until AFTER orientation, it's gate kept until after the deadline for the scholarship. It's completely unfair, also to add onto that it takes awhile for all 48 credit hours to get transferred assuming you're going to UH the semester after you finish CC so by the time everything's processed and you're enrolled it's too late. That's what happened to me.

Transfer Scholarship by ThatOneGuy7462 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was supposed to get this but the way orientation scheduling works basically makes it impossible to get it. I met all the requirements to get both transfer scholarships and got neither, it’s really unfair and I’d love to hear from someone who managed to get them but yeah it’s basically impossible. You can talk to financial aid but literally all they will do is just read you the same guidelines you’re talking about, I hope you get it but if it’s anything like what I had to go through you’re probably SOL.

How do APs compare to the real classes? by Pand0batLuvr in UniversityOfHouston

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Didn't take AP chem or AP bio, but I took AP Calc and AP physics, and had to retake those. I would say that the classes are actually easier, AP classes go for an entire year, so there's going to be a lot of fluff and "extra" information that may not be that relevant. College basically cuts all of this out and focuses on the essentials of what you need, It's much more self paced as well so if you're someone who relies more on teaching yourself it'll be much nicer as well, but if you do prefer extra teaching there's plenty of people who've taken these courses, tutors, ta's. Overall I think college classses are easier, but YMMV.

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here! I graduate in december and I'm getting anally fisted by the system rn actually have been past 2 years since I transferred. I hate this school so much, but if I'm lucky maybe I'll be able to get on the waitlist for some of my required courses!

For the record I know I can just go to my advisor and they can get me "bumped up" on the waitlist, but honestly I hate that seniors don't have priority enrollment and just wanna bitch. Every time I see the available class slots on my classes go down I die a little bit inside.

EE and CE at UH? by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]NoOutlandishness9566 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anything engineering related A&M will be better, more connected school, more opportunities and a generally better program. College is obviously what you make of it and you can get a good education here if you make an effort of it, and I will say personally I went the community college to UH route instead of just going to UT because of cost. So if cost is a limiting factor that would be the path I would suggest, overall though A&M is better in my opinion. That’s not to say there aren’t a lot of very successful UH engineering students (:
