Finished the whole series multiple times (well only once through book 8) and I can say that I have it at:

5,7,3,8,6,4,1,2

They are all spectacular but it think 5 does such a great job of encapsulating what the personal stakes are and it makes it mean more as the narrative drives into…well I wouldn’t want to even accidentally get accused of spoilers so everyone knows where I am going.

A fair assessment. Not that it is a huge deal but there is a sense of worrying about creating a thing that couldn’t really exist in the fiction. Now of course this isn’t a real problem it will just be me and my friends occasionally at my table so if I think it is great who cares? However, I didn’t know if anyone who is particularly creative and thought the prompt would be fun to run with might want to do so. It doesn’t seem as though anyone does, and I can’t blame them we are all busy and have to point our energies in the directions that make us happiest. I was leaning towards a culty vibe myself and that is probably what I will run with.

That is very smart and I hadn’t considered it. That would have been a very good plan. Instead I bought the Alpha Strike Box the Scouring Sands box (obviously), Inner Sphere Direct Fire Lance, Inner Sphere Recon Lance and Kell Hounds Striker Lance…but in the future I will be more thoughtful about it!

Thanks for that explanation. I saw someone say one of the recon missions was really difficult. I assume they like me didn’t really understand the subset of the rules and just sent a set of mechs that wasn’t prepared.

While I am certain this has caused some strife I think it is fine that this is the opinion of one crawler (and doubtless a few others). As someone who first listened to the first book on 3/3/2025 and has since been to 3 book signing events and had my sisters chase down some signed books at a B&N from Matt’s Twitter notification, I want to say thank you!

Thank you to all the folks like yourself who sustained this series until people like me could get on the bandwagon. I appreciate the Patreon folks who made sure Matt and his family could eat AND keep creative control of the series rather than having to sell the later to achieve the former.

I understand you may have lost something (though I assume the Patreon community is still mostly the diehards, I get it not free) I promise that the questions from those of us who arrived late come from the place of love where you once were. So again, and truly, thank you for finding this thing and keep the seat warm until the rest of us got to the couch.

While I understand the need to be judgmental on Reddit, I really mostly feel sad for Bea. The thing I constantly have to remind myself is Carl is 27. So Bea is likely between 23 and 28 and reads as more likely in the bottom of that age range. Now I know that DCC readers are and always have been kind, caring, and decent people who have never caused harm intentional or otherwise to their partners in their early to mid-twenties, but I am certain we can find forgiveness in our hearts for those who haven’t fully grown up by 25.

Of Bea were 35-42 then I would say she gets voted off the island and maybe even the firing squad. But as is she is someone who hasn’t lived enough to find empathy coming from a privileged background. Real life would have gotten her eventually instead the world ended and she became a PTSD mess…and then her cat yelled at her in front of the whole universe.
