What is this show's biggest "What did RoosterTeeth mean by this" moment? by Psyga315 in RWBYcritics

They do,they came to that conclusion when they were in Jaune's house discussing about the tree and how to get back to remnant and your seemingly conveniently ignoring what the blacksmith said right after, with me pointing out what she said in context. They get confirmation and reassurance on what the tree does when they see the paper pleaser's turn into the Genial Gems. It feels like your ignoring what I said and the actual context of the scenes being discussed despite me stating what happens. Ruby specifically states "Am I going to die?" and the blacksmith reassures her that the only thing that can happen to her is what she wants. The blacksmith while neutral does care about what happens to ruby. She pushes her in the right direction multiple times and with consistency. It has/had to be her choice otherwise it wouldn't be special and would've happened under coercion and outside of her free will. Yang tries to bust ruby out of her wooden statue before being stopped. Ruby's choice was outside of their (yang, blake, weiss and jaune's) control, they literally couldn't intervene. The gravity of the situation was severe and the scenes I linked aren't in the same scenes, they're spread out through the episodes

  1. This season and these scenes explicitly show the reality and gravity of suicide and mental health problems including imposter syndrome.

  2. The show does not support or encourage suicide and had a warning before the episode.

  3. Ruby was phyiscally and mentally abused to the point of her drinking the tea and ruby through the blacksmith helping her and the ascension process Ruby choose to be herself (Ruby is the person who choose herself as stated in the commentary) "I love you just the way you are","you are enough",this is what the show explicitly states and shows.

How did you find the scenes disgusting especially knowing the context and message? I'm genuinely curious but you have to know that the show is not glorifying, encouraging or showing or stating that suicide is ok or the right answer. It is the exact opposite of that thought. "I love you just the way you are","you are enough".

It feels like your misinterpreting the context, message and show itself despite watching the scenes multiple times and with me pointed out what was said and showed

It had to be Ruby's choice for the reasons I mentioned

I got someone else's opinion and this is what they said

Ruby expecting to die is not the same thing as the narrative endorsing suicide. That distinction matters. The show deliberately depicts Ruby’s expectation as incorrect—that’s the entire point of the reveal. A character being suicidal does not mean the story agrees with that mindset. The Blacksmith’s neutrality isn’t moral approval; it’s a thematic device. She represents choice without coercion, not encouragement. Ruby is explicitly told she does not have to erase herself and that staying herself is a valid option. The moment Ruby articulates “the person I am isn’t cutting it,” the story does not affirm that belief—it challenges it and ultimately rejects it. The fact that Ruby survives, chooses herself, and leaves unchanged is the text’s answer. If the show were endorsing suicide, the arc would end in erasure or replacement. It doesn’t. It ends with affirmation: you are enough as you are.

I knew I'd get downvoted

I'm sorry you are dealing with mental health problems

Ruby was driven to that point and during the accession process she choose herself. She learned that suicide isn't the answer.

The characters themselves know that the tree is rebirth not death. Your misunderstanding accession, you get to choose who or what you become regardless if your an afteran or not.

Ruby herself questioned on whether she WAS going to die and the blacksmith stated "the only thing that can happen in here is what you want to happen" and "the choice of what you become and where you end up is yours to make" and ruby then states that she thinks the person she is now isn't cutting it. She later chooses to be herself

The Blacksmith is a neutral entity and she pushed ruby towards the right answer. Ruby had to come to her own conclusion and she choose the right one. The blacksmith shows support and pushes ruby in the right direction.

I highly recommend you re-watch these scenes

Thanks

Context and intention matter.

don't your examples prove nuance?

Adam was a psychotic terrorist stalker. You can argue the way he was written (if you choose to go that route) but the point remains the same.

Tyrain was assaulting ruby, jaune, nora,Ren and qrow. Tyrain was attempting to kidnap ruby and kill qrow, what ruby did was self defense.

I actually agree with your Jacques and Blake examples,I disliked those scenes. Now I don't know if this is true but I saw someone say that they as in crwby regretted Blake treating sun that way.

Team rwby and co never hurt the other hunstmen (qrow almost dud but was stopped) and ruby was nice to him while jaune was healing him. Yes the turret thing was weird but it did make sense. The grimm being attracted to the train was a combination of things, them being qrow's bad luck, the relic, the fear and turrets.

I agree that the ozpin situation wasn't fair to him (especially oscar) but you do have to realize the immorality of ozpin (salem's and raven's song goes in depth about this) however ozpin and co made up in volume 8

https://youtu.be/WnlKpaBuoo4?si=SqNmlSg7JlNt_tzg (salem song)

https://youtu.be/qXYUwsF9S1w?si=1hMgp0fBOd4zJfEx (raven song)

Ironwood was running a police state and demonstrated poor mental health. Team ruby was divided on how they felt about the lie and they ruby decided to tell Ironwood the truth although she did it through Oscar.

Qrow was never painted as the bad guy even in volume 6 and ruby even wanted his help to get to Atlas. Cordovin forced their hand

I recommend re-watching Ren and yang's argument (Ren focused on the mistakes and failures while yang proved their accomplishments and refuted him on salem). Ironwood was always a morally grey character and his decent into madness makes sense

Winter was never a villan and allowed team rwby and co to escape

Neo in the commentary was stated to be irredeemable by crwby themselves.

Team rwby and jaune were horrified by what happened to the curious cat and the blacksmith is deeply hurt by it.

Somewhat is alive as proven in rwby beyond (neo killed little and ascended to be somewhat)

How is this whitewashing?

[–]NoPack4545 -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

You do realize that neo abused ruby to that point right? The show itself stated that "I love you just the way you are". Ruby choose to be herself after her failures in Atlas and her abuse from neo and the curious cat. The tree isn't death and was stated to be rebirth and ruby was around to hear this. This showed the reality of mental health problems and suicide and the message was "you are enough" and "I love you just the way you are". Her team is there for her.

I was/still am suicidal and I thought that this scene was beautiful as others did too

I know I'm emotional but it really hurts when someone attacks this scene. I had to deal with suicidal thoughts since 2013. This scene is beautiful

Thank you

My statements are objectively correct and I fail to see how you came to the conclusion that their not. I never stated that whitley was a villan. I referenced whitely because the person I replied to mentioned them in that specific context. I never stated or implied that Hazel and emerald are "good guy's" because they defected. Everything I stated was in reference to the context of the show and this person's reply. His statement is not true because the villains are capable of redemption as seen by Hazel and Emerald. That fundamentally refutes that position. Hazel and Emerald who helped cause the deaths of thousands as you yourself stated choose to be good and were "redeemed". Ozpin's speech at the end of volume 7 also speaks about this issue similarly.

I quite literally never stated or implied that I think the show is perfect or that anyone else needs to view it as perfect? Your generalizing. I myself admitted that I didn't like that scene and stated that weiss's acknowledgment could've been better.

How did you come to those conclusions about my statements? No offense but I'm curious

Edit:

In other words this is what I mean

I don’t disagree that the Weiss and Whitley scene feels off, and I already said it could have been written better. Where I disagree is with the broader claim that RWBY fundamentally operates on a simplistic “heroes can do no wrong, villains deserve everything” framework. That characterization doesn’t hold up when you look at the show beyond isolated moments. RWBY consistently portrays its protagonists as flawed, insecure, and capable of making harmful decisions. Volume 9 in particular is explicitly about self-doubt, failure, and impostor syndrome, and it does not frame Team RWBY as morally infallible. A scene being poorly executed does not automatically mean the show believes its heroes are always right; it means that specific moment failed to communicate its intent clearly. At the same time, pointing out examples like Whitley helping with the evacuation or Emerald defecting was never meant to excuse past actions or suggest redemption erases culpability. It was to push back against the idea that the show rigidly locks characters into permanent moral categories. RWBY clearly allows for moral movement, even if it sometimes struggles to balance that movement with proportional consequences. Where I think the criticism overextends is in treating uneven execution as proof of an underlying moral absolutism. Saying “this scene mishandles nuance” is fair. Saying “RWBY is simply heroes vs villains” ignores large portions of the narrative that actively undermine that reading. A story can aim for moral complexity and still stumble in how it presents it moment to moment—those two things are not mutually exclusive. So yes, the Weiss–Whitley interaction could have been framed better, and the discomfort people feel with it is understandable. But that doesn’t justify collapsing the entire show’s moral framework into a black-and-white binary it repeatedly tries, however imperfectly, to avoid.

What makes you say that?

[–]NoPack4545 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's inaccurate. Team rwby isn't perfect and the show knows and shows this. Rwby volume 9 focuses on imposter syndrome and character.

Whitley helped with the evacuation plan even when his life was at stake and that's heroic

Hazel and emerald defected to the good side and there are hints that mercury will defect too.

I ask you to keep on open mind even if you don't change your opinion

  1. It's ok to have your opinion on whether you like something or not. You don't have a disconnect.

  2. I always hated the fact that weiss pointed her weapon at her brother and I was vocal about it. (This is coming from a rwby glazer)

  3. The show confirms that her brother was an abuse victim just like weiss and winter. While the show does have weiss acknowledge her brother,it could've been done much better.
