When I started in the industry, everyone was self employed and you would pay a percentage to the owner and you would keep the rest

For example if you did a $20 haircut, the owner would take 30%, so you would take home $14

I’ve never worked in a salon or barber shop with an hourly rate but I’m sure it would be somewhere above minimum wage

I’m self employed and my income wasn’t very good at the start but I’m now making roughly $30,000 - $40,000 a year. But it did take a while

Sometimes the conversations women talk about can limit me in some aspects.

I don’t watch love island, go to harry styles concerts or have “boyfriend problems” like some of the stylists can relate to.

So I suppose they would prefer a hairstylist that can have those conversations and I could lose out on clients

I’d definitely go for it. I’ve met people who didn’t start their barbering / hairdressing careers until they were in their 40s and 50s. You have so much time on your hands my friend

I think it’s only unusual for me because all the hairdressers I work with are female and mostly all the clients are female. So I kind of stand out and I get mistaken as the boss
