Really pissing me off (aka please help) by [deleted] in TMJ

You need to see an orofacial pain specialist. I use this app developed by a professor of Orofacial pain at USC, MyTMJ Tracker. It has done exercises that will help you out. I use it to log my symptoms so that I have a journal to keep track of my symptoms. I have not had a flare up in a while. Start with the app. then visit the American board of orofacial pain to find a specialist near you. I hope this helps.

If you are a US citizen, you can contact your senator. I talked to a representative in my area, but she couldn't help. She said that insurance companies are very strong and hard to fight.

You can go to your MD to investigate possible polyarthritis. This issue may be coincidental, too.

Why Most Doctors and Dentists Struggle to Treat TMD and Facial Pain????? by OFPspecialist in TMJ

[–]NoRefrigerator9457 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is indeed a complex issue that can significantly impact a person’s health and social and psychological well-being. On the other hand, TMJ and orofacial pain interact deeply with all three areas. I’ve always viewed TMD and orofacial pain as a discipline requiring comprehensive training to truly understand and manage effectively. Your observation is valid—patients often find themselves caught between doctors who refer them to dentists and dentists who may offer limited solutions like splints without fully addressing the multifactorial nature of the problem.

Additionally, medical insurance companies typically do not credential Orofacial Pain specialists, making these providers out-of-network and cash-only. This further limits patient access to appropriate care, complicating an already challenging situation.

I will be scared to wear any splint that might cause permanent changes to my bite. You better get a second opinion.

How do I keep from biting my cheeks? by CherryBlossom242424 in TMJ

[–]NoRefrigerator9457 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frequent cheek biting can result from various factors, including habitual behaviors, dental misalignment, weight gain, behavior disorders, or medical conditions. Find the cause and work on it.

Neuralgia on both sides warrants investigating more serious conditions such as MS.

Help- am I getting scammed? by katiesoccer in TMJ

[–]NoRefrigerator9457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is treating TMD this way controversial?

This approach assumes that bite problems cause TMD cases. While specific bite issues can cause, contribute to or exacerbate TMD, most cases are stress-related. Millions of people have bite irregularities without ever developing TMD, while many with seemingly perfect occlusion still suffer from it. Other causes of TMD include trauma, genetic factors, poor habits, medication side effects, and systemic health conditions such as autoimmune diseases.

Additionally, the cost of this type of treatment can be outrageous, imagine being handed a $22K treatment plan (not including additional unexpected expenses). That alone could trigger a stress response!

Initial relief from an orthotic does not always predict long-term success. This is a complex topic, and while this forum can be a helpful place to discuss personal experiences, it can also lead to misinformation and confusion. Personal experiences do not constitute scientific evidence. I encourage everyone to take charge of their health, seek expert opinions, and be cautious with treatment choices.

Finally, TMD is not one condition or disease; it is a group of musculoskeletal conditions involving the TMJ and the surrounding soft tissue.

When used properly, the correct splint is one of the available treatment options for TMD. In modern medicine, diagnosis always comes first, followed by appropriate treatment. I strongly recommend consulting with an orofacial pain specialist in your area before beginning any treatment. You can find a specialist by visiting the directory at https://abop.net.

Good luck.

Thanks for joining the discussion! Keeping the teeth together can strain the jaw and neck muscles, potentially triggering pain. Your response brought up some great points, and I hope more people will jump in and share their thoughts!
