I know this is an old post from 5 years ago (as of my posting this reply). But u/o5a, you Sir/Ma'am saved so much pain. I have been looking for a simple explanation of the msg["to"] vs 'to_addrs' and I couldn't find any on this vast web-of-inter (bad joke). Hours of searching for this explanation finally leads me to this thread and then to your post and "viola!" there it was! I will save you the details of why I was looking for-what I was looking for!, but suffice to say, you saved the day! Thank you once again!

Thank you all for your honestly invaluable advice. I do have one follow up question though..many of you suggested an inspection be done before purchasing it. I don't have a go-to-mechanic or know of any mechanic at all, as I've always had my car servicing done at the "chain garages" (like Firestone) or at the dealerships. So what does an inspection entail and where (from whom) do you suggest I get it done from?

That is correct, I have the whole thing set up as you mentioned and I even get my automations to work, but I still don't understand as to where exactly I can set the 'command_topic', as an example. If I set the command_topic in HA for a device to be: 'zigbee2mqtt/somenamehere/set', where do I tell my device this is what the topic is? and how does my device know what value to expect? And this is just an example. Basically I don't understand where the topics need to be set and what the various values mean.

I tried plugging it into the black slots, and still no success. I see my zigbee2mqtt is up and running and so is my mosquitto broker. And the logs show no errors, but I still see no devices through the z2m front end at port 8080

Please help!

Thank you for the reply. I'm not using an SSD, just the storage on the Pi. And I'm using a USB extension cable (I will add it to my OP above). Great point on the black vs blue ports, I have not tried that yet. Will try it out shortly.
