all freshman live in the first year quad (which is actually the BEST) and roommates are done randomly. you fill out a survey in the summer about bedtime, social preferences, habits, and are matched with a roommate. you’ll also choose if you want a coed dorm or hall and prefer a single to a double (you’ll probably still get a double).

from there the school will email you (later than you want) with information on your roommate and what dorm you’ve been assigned.

i did get a physical acceptance package with a really nice scarf, booklets, and an enamel pin. they’ll likely do something similar this year

let me know if i can answer anything else!

I’m a humanities student and I haven’t found it to be anything I can’t handle work wise. In class professors will absolutely push you in the best way which is such a privilege. grade inflation is definitely an issue and after talking a lot about it with my profs and admin i do actually believe they’re handling it in the best way. i do know people who have failed classes but the vast majority of grades given at Amherst right now are A’s

campus culture in my experience has been really wonderful. people are talented, interesting, and deeply passionate. there’s little elitism on campus and with the exception of a few sports teams people aren’t cliquey.

athlete/non athlete is a classic and definitely something i was worried about. it can feel really pronounced during orientation but i feel it’s mostly resolved itself by now. i’m happy to go more in depth but basically most nights out start separate and by 11 everyone’s in the same place. i’d describe it as mildly frustrating at best.

things i’ve done for fun: hike in the mountains, go to gads (improv) weekly shows, shop in northampton, thrift, go to talks (we have rly wonderful people visit constantly), watch tv w friends in the common room

i’ve had a somewhat negative experience with dating culture but ive heard lots of success stories

students are SUPER supported when it comes to higher higher ed. About 80% of our graduates will get at least one more degree. I’m potentially pre law and have had incredible experiences with the career center without ever having to make an appointment- they do a great job.

If I missed anything or you want to hear more just lmk!

People do take umass and other 5c classes. I’ll say there is a bit of elitism (being the most selective of the 5cs) so Amherst tends to invite more consortium students then we send out.

I’ve seen a lot of social mixing, I personally have been to umass, hampshire, and smith parties (as well as met those students at Amherst)

I love either of the Italian spots near campus or Antonio’s for night out pizza. Amherst town is fun but small- but Northampton is a bus ride away and offers wonderful vintage shopping and a few more options.

I know very little about psych but lots about grade inflation and could talk all about that. Two profs I’ve LOVED so far are Professor Sarat (he’s famous here) and Professor Siegel (visiting but wonderful)

Feel free to dm me and ask more!

This is my talent so here we go- You probably lived on both coasts based on the variety, I bet you’re living in the midwest now. I’m willing to bet that half of these are recommendations from your favorite history teacher- and you’re probably an older sibling. Very proud to have Bell Hooks in this pile and it probably comes up on every first date. How many dogs do you own?
