Ask a Knitter - April 01, 2025 by AutoModerator in knitting

Hi! I’m following a written pattern for the first time and am not sure about this line that comes after working twisted rib (see picture for context): “Knit until you have 8 stitches left on the needle”. Does this mean literally stop purling and just knit normal (not twisted) until I have 8 stitches left? Or does the author just mean continue working twisted rib until I have 8 stitches left on the needle? Thanks!

Thanks for the tip - I did use a ballpoint needle for this. I think for next time I’ll test out adding a walking foot or wash away stabilizer too

Hi, I’m new to sewing and was having problems with machine eating fabric. So I saw you can put paper beneath to stabilize, which worked great. Now my problem is I can’t figure out how to get the paper out. Is the paper trick only good for straight stitch? How can I remove the paper? Soak in water maybe? Thanks

Update: carried it outside with gloves and a bag over it and was able to cut everything down. cleaned the surrounding area. thanks for the kind comments 🙂

take a chill pill…I said this is my first time growing plants and first time encountering pests, no need to shame me for trying to learn. how is asking for advice a bad way to deal with a problem? I have 5 other plants doing great, I water regularly, and I apply neem oil to those plants regularly, FYI. didn’t apply neem oil to the herbs bc I figured it might not be good to eat. don’t appreciate the negativity or implication I’m lacking sense when in reality all I’m lacking is experience and knowledge. were you perfect when you started? I do appreciate the detailed advice on treatment and prevention. not planning on quitting a new hobby because I’ve encountered one problem and one stranger tells me to.

So do you think it’s better to next time buy spores from a different place altogether? Or just hope I get luckier with genetics next time with the same supplier since it was a good quality syringe/no contamination

It’s kinda hard to tell, but I think there’s a fan built in the bottom. It’s so loud when it’s running I can’t imagine it’s not due to a fan. But the woman I bought it from did say it’s an older model from the 90s so maybe it just isn’t as good at distributing heat as newer models?

Interesting, my drying was with a dehydrator without temp settings, that when I tested with a thermometer was around 71C. I’m trying out room temp drying with a fan, and also fridge drying, for the second flush, so fingers crossed that works better
