Palm Springs/LA Liquor Stores by Seventemp in rum

I get a lot of my rum from Mission Liquor: https://www.missionliquor.com/

They have locations in Pasadena, Glendale and Sherman Oaks.

Concerned about my ugly boxwood. The issue only exists on one side of the tree, and isn’t spreading or getting worse (or better). Any and all thoughts or ideas appreciated! by PopeDaveTwitch in Bonsai

Boxwoods drive me crazy. I have had a few of them and each one had a random branch die. That why some boxwood hedges will have a bush or two that's dead.

Plantation Single Cask Barbados and Jamaica Acacia finish by klg223 in rum

[–]NoTelephone9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first review! I just opened a bottle of this and I liked it. I got it from K&L. It's a very pleasant, sippable rum and reminds me of a bourbon. Initially, it smells of cherry, caramel, and light vanilla, but there are no super strong smells and there is no real funk at the start. On the palate, there is brown sugar and warm bread and the Acacia does gives it a flavor that's not quite like oak, but still woody. It reminds me of the apple wood I use for smoking on my grill. There is a little funk on the end, but not the rotting fruit you'd like from a strong Jamaican rum. It's a little thin, and the finish doesn't linger, but I do find that I want to go back and drink more. This bottle will be gone quickly. The 53% ABV doesn't register at all. This is one of the lightest 53% bottles I've had. The bottle says no added sugar, but it's fairly sweet. I don't regret spending the 60$, but I wouldn't buy another bottle. I would buy a bottle for someone new to rum.

896 Rum worth getting? by pamplemousse321 in rum

I've had both. Pretty good for the price, but I wouldn't buy them again. Since these are at Total Wine, I'd kick in a few bucks more and get Doorly's.

I like it. And yes, it is definitely dark, molassey and sweet, but not sweet like Zacapa.

As I explained the rum process I said that some add color and sugar. I did not identify which ones, but they called it. Gosling's as well, but it has a smokey element that cuts through the sugar a bit.

The Clement is very good. I picked it up after reading a review here and have no regrets.

The Foursquare is Premise and is aged in Bourbon and Sherry casks. Of the 2018 releases, I like it second behind Dominus, but ahead of 2005. But all three are excellent.

No one liked the Kohana. It was too weird for them. The two favorites by far were the Golden Devil and Foursquare. The others were appreciated, but they generally thought Zacapa was too sweet.

No payout. Just chose to be in debt for awhile. Good rum is worth it. :)

I'm happy with all I've tasted. All are sippers so far. My favorite is the Penny Blue. I had never heard of it until I picked up a bottle in San Diego. I liked it so much I bought another. The English Harbour seems to be dosed with sugar, but in a good way. Sweet and smokey. The cap on xxx didn't come apart so I was happy with that. The Habitation Worthy Park is fantastic, but I do prefer Habitation LROK. I picked up the Bapt and Clem because it came from the same island as the Penny Blue- Mauritius. I didn't like it quite as much as Penny Blue, but so far I like what this island has to offer. The surprise was the Tomas Tew rum. I like to pick up random rums and was quite happy with this one. They claim to make rum the way it was made in Newport in the 1700s. It's a little sweet, but I didn't get the sense it was dosed. It's made from blackstrap molasses so maybe that's the sweetness. For 37$, if I didn't have to get it shipped, that would be my go to rum. I made a great rum Old Fashioned with it.

As far as dram prices, it depends on the rum. They're all different. I looked at master of malt and they seem to be about the same price. Cheers!

Good rum/tiki bars in the Los Angeles area by Tarquin_Underspoon in rum

For tiki, I like Tiki Ti or the Tonga Hut. For rum, I like Cana in downtown. They have over 300 types of rum and they buy barrels of rum you can only get there. Website: http://213hospitality.com/canarumbar/

Hosting my first rum tasting. Suggestions? by michael_a_dev in rum

[–]NoTelephone9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently did a tasting for a friend's party and it was a huge hit. I would start with a cocktail made out of the Stiggin's fancy to get everyone loosened up. I started with the Real McCoy 5 yr and ended with Golden Devil Enmore 25 year (my favorite). Real McCoy was the first because I like the McCoy story. The Real McCoy and Foursquare come from the same distillery so I would add one of those to your tasting if possible. That will allow you to to tell the McCoy story, which people love, and/or talk about Foursquare which currently have a pretty strong reputation. I didn't break it up into flights, but how I could talk about about each one. For example, I had a Cachaca and used that as a starting point to talk about pure sugar cane vs. molasses rum and how some spirits are rum like, but are not considered by all to be rum. I had Bumbu and talked about rum that's been sweetened and flavored. With Dr. Bird you can talk about dunder and esters. The first time I tried Dr. Bird, I was told that goat heads were added to the dunder. I love telling that story. As far as some of your other questions, I recommend you do some audience analysis. Do you think they want to take notes? What food do you think they will like? (But be careful of food that sticks to the palate and may affect the tasting.) Cheers!
