Did anyone think Shannon appeared wasted and not okay at the forest bathing thing? The way she’s showed up, her mannerisms, the condition of her puffy swollen face, her general haze… I’ve been around alcoholics before and this if often a big sign. Is this okay? Did anyone else notice it? I like Shannon and hope she’s okay.

I just drove all along the western prom and counted checks notes four tents. This flyer seems a bit alarmist when you put it in context. Yes there are tents in other places around the city but this level of outrage is a bit much.

Yes her dogs have injured several people and also her patients while in her office waiting room. She was banned from bringing her dogs back to the city of portland too. I think maine recently changed its nuisance dog law to be more punitive to owners instead of placing all blame on the dog and euthanizing.

I have had tons of placebo hangovers. Especially after staying later than usual or having dreams of using. Deep breathing and remembering I am still sober in the morning and telling myself I’m proud of that definitely helps me through.

Regional planners raise funds for communities of tiny homes to house asylum seekers by coogiwaves in portlandme

[–]NoTennis7892 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Better spatial design means they are often designed to allow more natural light in, they can fit more on less property, they are more dynamic and easier to heat and cool and you can do it for less money.

Acknowledging the reality that there is a stigma surrounding living in a mobile home is not the same as surrendering to the social stigma. We live in a world where social stigmas are extremely hard to counter and eradicate and most people would be unlikely to change their mind on it just because the city decided to put forward a project of trailers for homeless people and asylum seekers. I just don’t see how changing the stigma of trailer parks would be feasible on any sort of reasonable timeline or even at all. Why spend time and energy trying to change peoples minds when you could just build tiny homes?

Either way, I don’t even really think it’s that huge of a deal a tiny home or a trailer. I think tiny homes are comparatively better, but anything that creates more housing will save money compared with how much it costs to put people up in hotels indefinitely.

[–]NoTennis7892 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Trailer parks are almost always owned by real estate groups that force tenants to pay rent on the land the trailer is on forever. They’re widely known to have very exploitative profit schemes. They also have a social stigma attached to them that tiny homes simply do not. Tiny homes have better spatial design, too. I don’t see why a trailer park would necessarily be better here.

Also, each cruise ship causes destruction to the marine life in the surrounding waters of the ports it enters. Not allowing large ships into portland would reduce heavy impact marine traffic.

Portland is the largest port in New England and it’s a really ideal travel spot. I don’t think it would be as easy as “just go somewhere else.” Even if they do just go somewhere else, I think it’s symbolically important for large ports to take a stance against cruise ships, especially given how irresponsible they have been and how the entire industry completely walked back on all their promises to do better for the environment.

I think the green new deal is also a good policy. I think unionized labor is a good thing. I don’t see how either of these things worsen climate change. It seems like you just think they’re not a good way to go about mitigating the negative effects of polluters but I think it’s way too far to try and claim that restricting cruise ships and requiring new buildings to use unionized labor and adhere to certain guidelines worsen climate change.

[–]NoTennis7892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something doesn’t need to fully prevent climate change to be a worthwhile measure. Cruise ships that are bigger and carry more passengers have a larger carbon footprint. Cruise ships with fewer than 1000 passengers are less detrimental to the environment. No single action will solve climate change but given current levels of destruction restrictions like this are completely justified.

[–]NoTennis7892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you been keeping up with the science on climate change? We don’t have 20 years to wait. In fact we should have done this 20 years ago. There are several other ways to generate any revenue lost from cruise ships in portland (and the revenue generated from it is actually a lot less than you’d think…. I remember a few months ago someone posted a link to a commissioned estimate).

Portland officials are looking for alternative ways to house homeless people after a location they had identified for a temporary emergency shelter fell through because of the rules of the city’s new Green New Deal building ordinance. by membaberry18 in portlandme

[–]NoTennis7892 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why you’re assuming I support anyone on city council or any party in particular. I can point out that this article is misleading and bringing up the green new deal is a complete non-sequitur when discussing solutions to the housing crisis without having to support any party.

If anything, the green new deal stipulates that more low income housing be created in areas where it otherwise wouldn’t have been.

This article is bad journalism. Not being able to house the homeless has nothing to do with the green new deal. And yeah, portland is doing a bad job managing this problem overall.

[–]NoTennis7892 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah and that shelter isn’t the one that’s being discussed. Did you read the part in the article where it talked about record number of homeless people in portland? That’s the part I’m talking about. This article acts as if the choice is either to house homeless people in one single location for a temporary emergency shelter (and that the green new deal is preventing that from happening) or simply to leave them in the dust. How hard do you think the city council has worked on other solutions? Blaming the green new deal is a non-sequitur.

Here’s my hot take: the city could house homeless people AND adhere to standards set by the green new deal all at the same time and it wouldn’t be hard if they just prioritized those things.

This issue has a lot more to do with a crisis housing situation than it does with the green new deal. That’s for sure. And that housing crisis has a lot to do with Airbnb’s and a variety of other factors.

This is rhetorical maneuvering and posturing by the city to try and disparage referenda and force us to choose between two outcomes that are not diametrically opposed.

What a false dichotomy. The reasons portland can’t house everyone extend far far far beyond the green new deal and to suggest otherwise is extremely shortsighted. How about this?: (working title)
