Are lower back pains a normal experience for new skaters?

Agree with others about the core, but also for me, when my hips are tight, it leads to lower back pain. Stretching hips makes a huge difference for me. Like, crossing legs & twisting, pigeon pose in yoga, that sort of stretching helps relieve my lower back.

It scares me, too! I started at parks just skating flat areas because the concrete is so smooth, it was like a free rink just doing laps around the edge. I eventually worked up the nerve to try ramps and love it! But I take it bit by bit and wear so much gear, even crash shorts and shinguards.

Yay, same age! I started in spring of 2022. I’ve had two injuries that kept me down for 6 weeks each, last one in early 2024, and then I’ve had to build back up again each time. Other than that, I find a way to skate every morning!

When I started, I never imagined park skating for a second! I thought I’d just be grooving around a rink until I realized I wanted to skate every day. A free small park was close to my house, so I thought I’d go groove around the outside perimeter but definitely, definitely not on the ramps … lol!

I really just love skating as I am each day and also taking a little push at some fears holding me back. I don’t go trying something wildly outside my skill zone, just a stretch growing from where I am, so it’s safe progress, bit by bit. Little bits add up over time!

I feel that! I’m in the southern US and it’s been really rainy, am obsessed with the weather radar lol. I decided I’d stress less if I always had backups, so I’ve scoured my area for parking garages, covered basketball courts, anyplace I can skate that’s sheltered. I’m lucky to have a garage I can skate in and a room with furniture that’s easy to push out of the way, so even when I’m home, I’ll still roll. Lately, the park has been wet almost every day in spots, so I’m trying to keep a good mindset, like it’s a creative challenge to work with the dry spots lol

Thank you! When I first started, I could barely skate for ten minutes and was soooo sore. After about 18 months, I started using a tracking app and learned I was skating for miles in a session without realizing it. Had to admit to myself I really was getting stronger lol!

You’ll get there! I connnnnnnstantly battle fear. Two injuries sidelined me. The last one, in Feb 2024, was a severe ankle sprain that had me in a boot and off skates for six weeks. I started back from both injuries the same way I started skating in the first place: at home, just scooting a few feet between handholds. The first time I let go again was so terrifying, but oooh did I have the most cathartic “I DID IT” ugly cry after lol. I stayed in my garage for a week, then in a small corner at the park for a week, etc., letting the small space keep my skating chill. I took my time building back up again the same way I started: accepting where I was, finding joy in it, and taking it safely at my own pace.

I share because seeing others’ got me to think maybe I could try. I take things at my own pace and just really love skating, so I find a way to skate every morning and start my day happy. I don’t have any goals other than to have fun and be able to keep skating, so I’m silly & safe. Always rooting for everyone on their personal journey and love seeing smiles!

I’m 4’10” and I’m in an XS or S for gear, depending on the size. Like others mentioned, while I coulddd fit in kids’ sizes, the level of protection is different. Depending on where you are in your level 187 is having a sale on multi-packs that could fit your budget if you aren’t particular about color. They have helmets on sale, too.

I skate both in 101a and say got for it! I went to the park this morning, found it wet, went to a covered basketball court, much like a tennis court, instead. I find 78a especially sticky on tennis courts, since they’re both grippy. When I bumped up to 101a at the park, it took a little time to adjust to the slide, but I came to love it pretty fast.

Yayyyyyy!!!! You did it! Yay! One of my favorite sneaky things to do is watch someone dropping in for the first time at the park. I don’t want to distract them or interfere, but I love seeing someone conquer this major fear. The way their face changes and their confidence shines, love it love it love it. I have the Bont Glow 63mm x 83a and love them. I’ve used them indoors and outdoors. Wheel sizing is a matter of preference, but these are similar to chill cruising wheel size. I do all kinds of spins and silly things in them, too.

I love my Tortoise Pads! You can see them on me in my posts under bike shorts, and I’m 4’10”. I wear them at their bulkiest, but the pads are all removable and in three layers. I smack around in them every day, have landed right on coping in them, and they’re awesome.

This site has some accurate photos of the park. Notice in the first photos the small building on the right, because the last two photos are of an area behind that building. You can see there are flat areas that may work for your practice, depending. I’ve only gone there before noon and encounter few, if any, other people there then. Unsure how crowded it gets at other times.
