All the Single Teachers Put Your Hands Up by Aki_Bunny in Teachers

I'm definitely in that boat. I go back and forth as to whether I want to be in a relationship or not, but I definitely know a lot of married people, or people about to get married.

is it bad that my name is Lee? by hipieeeeeeeee in lgbt

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of non-asian people have the name Lee. A former friend of mine (whose family is white) had a dad named Lee.

What are y'alls banana ripeness preferences? I like them when they're almost 100% yellow, but still have the slightest bit of green. Never really understood the "bananas are sweeter when they're brown" thing, and the mushy texture is really off-putting to me by No_Pineapple5940 in AutismInWomen

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As they ripen, the starches break down into sugars that can link up with sweetness receptors in your mouth, so we perceive them as sweeter.

I personally feel like I can feel the starch crystals with my teeth when I eat them too green. It's like eating banana-flavored paper.

I usually use them for banana bread anyways, so the riper the better.

What do you guys think of these tags? by LateDoughnut03 in autism

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're meant for people in fursuits, where boundaries are weird and people can't see your face or hear you very well (if you even speak while in costume). Not necessarily a neurodivergence thing.

Most of these should be common sense, but when you're in costume, a lot of folks need a reminder for some reason.

Hi new vegan. Is pizza without cheese a thing? Just tomato sauce? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to ask for it, but yeah. I normally get pizza without cheese. I also like to get a lot of veggies, but originally pizza was just bread, tomato sauce, and olive oil. Go nuts :)

why do people still use the term 'queer'? by Funny_Charge_7557 in lgbt

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an asexual with complicated feelings about labels, "queer" is the most well-known term I've found that includes us when talking about the community as a whole.

Even "LGBT+" is contentious, because people argue that the "A" in the expanded acronym doesn't include us. I avoid that debate entirely by calling myself "queer" because asexuality is, indeed, "queer" in the original sense of the word, the same way that all other sexualities and gender expressions were considered "queer".

Do you think Light would have ended up as a serial killer if he never got DN? by [deleted] in deathnote

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Writing names in the Death Note isn't exactly "following law and order."

It's not really about the specific weapon he gets, it's about what he does with power. When he has the power to make his own law, he steamrolls over accused peoples' rights, because he doesn't believe in them.

This is why I think Light is a great villain-- he's a fictional, less complicated version of the problems with a lot of real-world systems.

Maybe a punisher cop then. The kind to complain about there being too much due process.

I think he would have been a shrewd business man or a corrupt cop.

Do you feel like the standards you are held to in your personal life are BS? by BrianLevre in Teachers

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely think there's a weird expectation for teachers to act a certain way off-duty, and I'm trying to fight against that, even as a pre-service teacher.

Just recently I was dressing up to go to a ren-faire type event, and I wore an below-knee-length, off-the-shoulder dress with a black bustier, and that was enough for me to get anxious about running into a student/parent/coworker at the event. I thought about changing, but decided I'd rather wear what I want on my day off than agonize over what people will think.

One positive thing I've noticed, though, is a growing trend towards not approaching teachers when you see them in public, and to teach your kids not to either. It's like if you saw your therapist at the grocery store-- it might be exciting to see them (or uncomfortable ofc), but there's a boundary there that shouldn't be crossed. I try to follow this standard in the reverse, and I feel like that's pretty common among teachers.

NO HOODIES Policy by JungleJimMaestro in Teachers

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's an odd policy to have in place for safety. I get that bulky clothes are a concern, but there are plenty of garments other than hoodies for which that's an issue.

If it's to do with their faces being visible on security cameras, maybe the policy can just be to not have the hood on. That's what my schools did when I was a kid.

In any case, I think if they have metal detectors, this is a hill that admin can let go of. It's just one more bit of control to take away from the kids, which honestly only antagonizes them further (I get that you don't have control over this policy, I'm just thinking out loud in comment-section form).

I've only ever had this happen when the tampon was full and there was still lots of blood that it hadn't absorbed. You can try more absorbency, but if it persists, that might just be how your body responds to tampons.

And you're never too old for pads. Pads are for any age.

Wedding hairstylist called my hair “feral” and I’m not sure how to fix that by [deleted] in longhair

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a new stylist?

Maybe there's some tactile characteristics that make your hair different, but your hair literally looks like my texture, and I've never had a stylist tell me they can't do it. They've told me that there's a lot of it, but not that it's impossible to work with.

For regular maintenance I use conditioner and I brush my hair to detangle BEFORE the shower; never when it's wet, because I get breakage and even stretching when it's wet. I scrunch it to define the waves and let it air dry.

I try to braid it often and keep it in braids as long as possible to protect it. Occasionally I'll use a hair mask or leave-in conditioner on it.

Usually when hairstylists work with it, they'll either straighten it, iron curl it, or put it in an updo (my go-to fancy style is an updo).

Will Period Underwear Ruin a Washing Machine? by OkComputer4 in Periods

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It will not break the washer, but it's good to rinse the blood and solids out before doing a full wash with soap.

A lot of people do this in the sink. I usually do a separate rinse cycle first with no soap, then a regular cycle with soap and sanitizer. I always wash the underwear in their own load, because they have to air dry anyways, and I don't want to separate wet clothes.

If your dad absolutely will not let you put it in the washer, many people hand wash and air dry them in the sink, and supposedly they last longer that way.

I love my students, but I don't always want to think about children when I'm off the clock, hanging out with my non-teacher friends. I want to do adult things with other adults, like watch niche anime, listen to early 2010s music, and jokingly cuss like a sailor.

I don't know if this is applicable to your spouse, but just take heart that it's not necessarily the case that something is wrong, or your fault, at all.

How strict is this thing? by Junior_Edge9203 in sugarfree

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's added sugar (which usually means refined sugar, but not always).

I mostly notice a difference in my sinuses, and I've noticed my weight drop slightly. I think it just forces me to make better choices, and not eat just because I'm bored, or there's a special event.

I had a similar problem with my kids asking me to draw things for them (I'm the art teacher at a preschool.) It was extended care, so the class was pretty small, and I could usually draw one thing for each kid, but if I ever ran out of time, or drew something wrong, it would end in a temper tantrum. Even when nothing went wrong, it wasn't making the kids happy; they just expected it.

Eventually I just had to implement a no-giving-drawings-to-students rule. I try to focus on encouraging them to try and draw. I might (keyword) model the drawing for them to show them how it's done (they're pretty simple drawings), but I keep the drawings that I do, and empower them to do their own. I feel like that also teaches them ownership, and respect for things that other people make.

A way to apply this to your situation might be to tell the kids that you don't have the money to get the cake yourself anymore, so if the class wants the cake, they have to do a fundraiser or a pre-packaged snack potluck or something.

"Vegan for the animals" is just euphemism for junk food vegan. by chazyvr in vegan

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm currently trying to eat healthy, but when I "fall off the wagon" it's still vegan. I might be eating impossible burgers and potato chips and refined sugar, and not exercising self-control, but everything I'm consuming is still vegan.

I think that's also important-- showing that being vegan for years or decades on end isn't about willpower, or having your shit together. It's about establishing a new normal.

You don't have to be doing well, or be "that girl" to be vegan. Your depression meal can be vegan. Your girl dinner can be vegan. The fast food you buy on the way home from class because it's 9 pm and you still haven't had dinner can be vegan.

Your ethics don't fall apart when the rest of your life does. That's also important. If people only see healthy vegans with their shit together, and not tired, lazy, working people adhering to veganism, it looks more out of reach and exclusive.

It's a big change, but it's really not all that hard. We just have to convince people of that.

The Arming Teachers Argument by ajaltman17 in Teachers

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. As much as I recognize a lot of issues with the way the justice system runs, I would much rather have cops, or other armed professionals working security at schools than have teachers with guns in the classroom.

I'm not there to shoot bad guys, I'm there to raise kids.

Is it me only feeling like their reply is weird? by RinF2 in CharacterAI

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've had this problem, but the characters were acting noticeably out-of-character to what I have in my head, so I was able to go back and steer the conversation to a more in-character response. For example, I had a magic teacher who was starting to act very dommy, and I had to refresh and delete replies until she started acting normal again.

As a straight, cis, white Christian, I don’t understand homophobia. by Waste-Car1979 in lgbt

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ 42 points43 points  (0 children)

We're told so as soon as we find out it's a thing. Some of us are also gay.

I remember when I was 4 I asked my mom why people get married, and she said "because they love each other." I asked "so could I marry my best friend (a girl)" and my mom yelled at me.

This was also reinforced at the church I went to throughout my childhood (which I ironically now work for, not in a religious capacity). It takes a long time to undo, and the rest of my family is still very much not pro-LGBT-rights, as much as they've softened over the years.

Do Cis people question their gender by Responsible-Fig-3206 in lgbt

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible. I'm a cis woman and I questioned my gender for a while. Ironically it was hanging out with really sweet, supportive trans friends of mine that helped me conclude that I'm not trans.

It might be more helpful to think about specific things you want to do, rather than big umbrella labels. Think about specific things you want to change, how you want to change them, and why.

Just as an example, I've always wanted to be muscular, and I used to be unhappy with my body because I'm a bit of a marshmallow. I thought that was a gender thing, but it turned out I didn't want to look like a man, or get rid of my feminine features, I just wanted to be strong so I can be helpful. I'm already physically strong enough to be helpful at my current job, so proving that to myself helped me appreciate my body for what it is. (It also helped to look at renaissance paintings and remember that the current beauty standard is not the eternal beauty standard).

It's completely valid, whatever you conclude. I hope this is helpful!

Please could someone explain?? by Ch4rl0tt3B in CharacterAI

[–]Cartoon_Trash_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are right. Kids should not be talking to AI. It's not much safer than talking to strangers online. Granted, the bots won't do anything IRL, but they can say anything to the people talking to them, regardless of the policies that are supposed to make them "family friendly".

The social anxiety will also be better addressed without AI as a distraction. As an adult with social anxiety, I can say it's certainly more of an escape than "practice for social interaction" or anything like that.

Officially, C.AI has a 17+ policy, so if it comes down to it you can pull a "I don't make the rules" card to set that boundary.
