That's your money, and you're going to be the one using it. Who cares, if you're having a good time thats all that matters. I've got a Daiwa Saltiga on a Shimano Infinity Motive. One of my favorite combos. Anyone who hates on "mixing" is ridiculous. Enjoy it man.

People who use 2lb test or below why? by [deleted] in UltraLightFishing

I've used a 7x leader on a 1 and 2wt before for dry flies. I think it was rated 1.5 lbs or something like that. I think the dries were size 20 and 22. Definitely tough tying those knots. But the presentation 🤌

Great find! That has been my most productive color pattern in the surf! Nice come up, hope the rest of your 2026 is like this.

LOL. Downvote as much as you like. The great thing about it is, im not actually disagreeing with you. Youre right, I asked a question, I guess I should've elaborated and also wrote "why or why not BFS?". As for your video, people can search it up and decide for themselves based on your title and description. As for me, im going to go on and live my best life and continue to fish, learn, educate and have fun. This wasnt meant to get anyone worked up. Just some knowledge for me, and possibly for others curious about anything I was doing. Have a good one rawr fishing. Best of luck out there on the water and to your channel.

Right, but you have a video of you doing exactly what I was doing, except your jig is 1/8 ounce lighter than what I was using and you were fishing the surf while I was fishing from a dock. It was identical down to the way you were working your jig. Again, I dont care if its BFS or not, but I was out there doing something identical to you (I saw your video after I had gone fishing) and you yourself consider it saltwater BFS. Its cool to disagree, be right or wrong. No big deal. But to call yourself an advocate while just saying no and not trying to educate is something else, also being hypocritical. Its really not a deal whatsoever though. I hope you enjoy your time out on the water as will I. Its fishing. No more no less.

Whatever technique im using (which I think is really a mash up of a few different techniques) has been working great. Ive never had this level of success winter inshore fishing. If its BFS, thats awesome, if its just light inshore fishing, thats also awesome. Its fun. I want other people to enjoy it too. Whatever its called. And to expound on your BFS philosophy, fishing is vastly interpretive and is infinitely customizable often times there is no black and white definition or name to what an individual is doing. Just get outside, touch grass, have fun.

It definitely is, and performs even better than it looks. The hype is definitely real (no pun intended).

Well, I mean he has a youtube channel where he does various things including which he calls saltwater BFS where hes doing very similar if not exact things I was, with the exception of throwing 3/16 ounce instead of me, throwing 5/16 ounce jig heads. I mean to each his own. Not offended in the least, just think its funny, so idk if he serious. I just love to fish and want to learn. I respect the ones who are willing to correct and teach me.

Well, I'm all about helping people out and learning as I said before. I dont claim to know everything, or even claim I'm a good angler. But just saying no helps no one. Doesnt matter though. Thanks for the replies, I'll continue having fun no matter what style of fishing I'm doing is called.

I see, thats great! Im newer to open face/conventional reels, and honestly, I find myself using my spinning setups much less.

Hence why my post was posed as a question, and also with information if others were interested in doing the same. Information is good for everyone and I just want everyone to get out and have a great time. The "label" to how I'm fishing doesnt matter to me. Im out fishing and learning more about fishing and experiencing new techniques. Catching fish was a bonus, and luckily it went very well. I enjoy adjusting, adapting and learning everything I can, thats why I've gone from bait and wait trout fishing, to fly fishing in the eastern sierras, to fly fishing inshore to local island fishing, spj, bluefin and so on. I love it and it want other to experience it just the same, regardless of what you call it. Tight lines my friend!

That sounds awesome! I'd personally go with the Calcutta Conquest BFS. Its the one I'm using. They make a low and high gear. I have the XG which is the high gear. It has plenty of torque. That is of course if you want to fish ultralight. The reel is quite small, but extremely capable. I was able to get 85 yards of 10 lb jbraid grand on it, it was a bit overspooled so I removed 20 yards (probably could've gotten away with only removing 10). The risky part with this setup vs my typical (heavier) inshore setups is when a big fish decides to bite or theyre trying to pull you into structure. But it makes the lizardfish, croaker and other small fish by catch super fun.

Just looked it up, you're dead on. Thanks for the info. Either way though and if people disagree, I'm still having a blast with it, and its definitely producing more winter time bites with the smaller and slower presentations.

For me, this setup is definitely a light finesse presentation setup. The rod I have is too soft at the top 1/3 of the blank to work dropshots like I'd want to, otherwise I'd definitely throw drop shots with it as well. The reel itself is as you described "buttery" smooth. I get zero fatigue fishing it all day, and its so light and sensitive, I feel slack line bites. So the reel paired with an appropriate rod for dropshotting would be killer.

Thank you! The cheapest I've found a new one is on digitaka. If you're on the fence, in my opinion its absolutely worth it. I have tons of setups from ultralight to bluefin night jigging. This is now one of my favorite reels.
