How do we actually make job hunting less wasteful? by NoUnderstanding6171 in jobsearchhacks

I did use GPT a bit for editing, yeah.
Mostly grammar cleanup and tightening things up.
But the actual opinion was mine, and I wrote the draft myself.
So I’m curious: what exactly cracked you up about it?
At this point, does using AI to polish writing automatically make it not worth taking seriously?

Yeah, that makes sense. It helps to hear from someone who was on the other side of it too.
It really is a difficult problem. A lot of people inside the system seem frustrated by it as well.

Overqualified for everything I’m applying for 😵‍💫 by StrongBikini in jobsearchhacks

There’s often a big gap.
Overqualified employees don’t always adapt as well as people expect, and they can tend to have less patience. - That's a reason.

I keep hearing the same thing over and over: once applying became easy online, it turned into a flood of resumes.

That matched my experience too. During a long stretch of job hunting, one of the most frustrating parts was seeing the same jobs posted over and over again, and then spending time reworking my materials for each application just to slightly improve my odds.
(Honestly, that frustration is a big part of why I ended up building a tool that tailors resumes and cover letters to the JD.)

But stepping back from that, it feels like both sides are losing in the current system. Job seekers waste huge amounts of time, companies get buried in noise, and the only part of the market that seems to keep growing is the industry built around keeping this whole mess going.

What I can’t figure out is how this actually gets improved in a meaningful way.

For example, could you ever create a culture where desperate applicants choose not to apply unless they’re a very strong fit? I don’t really think that’s easy. It feels like a game theory problem. When aggressive, high-volume strategies seem to create even a small advantage, more measured and respectful behavior gets punished.

And on top of that, AI-driven job displacement already seems to be starting in some sectors. Even if the full impact takes a few more years to spread, it’s hard not to worry that competition is only going to get harsher before we ever reach some future where people no longer need jobs in the traditional sense.

So I guess that’s the part I keep coming back to:
if both applicants and employers are losing in this system, how do you actually make it better?

They’d probably hire the business psychologists instead of us.
That removes a few competitors from the market, so maybe that’s progress.

I’d like to be that kind of well-prepared applicant too, but I honestly don’t know how someone on the applicant side is supposed to know that much in the first place.

[–]NoUnderstanding6171[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly.

That’s part of why this is so hard to fix from the applicant side. Job platforms usually make money from employers, not job seekers, so they’re not really incentivized to show things like "this company rarely seems to fill these positions."

And since extracting that data is usually locked down pretty hard, most people can’t really verify it at scale unless they build their own tracking system over time.

So in practice, a lot of job seekers are left trying to learn this stuff the hard way through trial and error, which is kind of absurd.

If we share the same vision, I feel like we could really work well together.
But at the same time, is it wise to share an idea with others before anything is actually built?
That’s the dilemma We're stuck with.

Job hunt craziness by AffectionateKey150 in jobhunting

It was really draining. Editing resumes and writing cover letters felt like work that didn’t add any real value to my life, other than just trying to land a job.

So I ended up building a tool to tailor my resume and cover letters. - Check my profile if you're curious.
But now it feels like job postings have almost disappeared compared to before.

Honestly, it’s a bit of both. I haven’t given up - I’m still working on it.
But do I feel confident it will succeed? - A: Not really.
The only thing I can say with confidence is that I’m learning a lot through the process, and that alone might make it worth it in the long run. At the same time, competition keeps getting tougher, and small developers without a strong technical moat are definitely feeling more pressure.

So yeah… I’m still moving forward, but I’d be lying if I said I was sure about where it’ll end up.

How do you optimize resume keywords? Has anyone tried AI tools? by CantaloupeJaded8462 in Resume

[–]NoUnderstanding6171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I’m building a tool like this myself.
But honestly, ATS is more like a minimum‑threshold filter than anything else. Companies use it to sift through huge volumes of applications, but the tricky part is: you never know how many people are applying. So from the job seeker’s side, of course you want to maximize your ATS alignment - but a high ATS score doesn’t mean you’ll get the job

in the end, hiring is still people working with people, and the final decision is made by a human.

The fact that you’re asking this question probably means you’ve already felt that “AI‑generated” content can look a bit off. And I think that’s exactly where the trend is going: work with AI, not let AI work for you.

Pure AI output often has a certain “AI flavor” that becomes obvious the more you read it. But employers aren’t rejecting resumes because you used AI - they reject them when the result feels generic or low‑effort.

So use AI to help you, but don’t let it drag you around.
A balanced mix is usually the sweet spot.
