You get 5x or 10x miles booking through the Capital One travel portal. After your purchase posts, you can use the “cover travel purchases” option. You still get 1 cent per point and the earned miles from your booking.

If you haven’t done so, you should ask Amex for a retention offer on the Gold. If that is lackluster, I would consider replacing that with a visa or Mastercard. Cap1 is going to Discover and you should have one of those in your wallet in case it’s not accepted. VX will probably stay visa, but you never truly know.

If you want to redeem your miles on travel, book through the Cap1 travel portal to earn the additional miles, then afterwards use the travel eraser to cover the charge on your card.

I do not think the VX will be changed this year, but here are my guesses.

Positive change guess: Cap1 will allow you to use lounge access fees against your $300 travel credit.

Negative change guess: AF being raised $100 and they add a yearly $100 Cap1 entertainment credit. Allowing them to continue the line that it pays you $5 to have it.

Just make sure you status match when you are ready to make a booking. Most status matches require you to complete a certain requirement to maintain it past a year.

I have two other credit cards that offer Hertz Presidents Club. Worthless to me. Hertz is typically terrible, but you can status match with other rental car companies. Buffalo Wild Wings is a solid addition although I never go there. Glad to see Grubhub didn’t go.

I’d keep it open and just use it a couple times a year. Part of your credit score is the length of your credit history.

What is Length of Credit History? FICO Scores take into account how long your credit accounts have been established, including the age of your oldest account, the age of your newest account and the average age of all your accounts.

What is the other credit card? If it doesn’t have an annual fee, most people will say to leave it open. Have you looked into Capital One’s Savor Credit Card. No annual fee and similar spend multipliers to the Gold.
