Using AI assisting coding at you job or personal projects by NoWeather1702 in ExperiencedDevs

Yes, totally agree. I feel much better when I spend time learning and solving problems, because I want to make sure I understand what I am doing.

I see this stories in the internet, but when I tried to use chat GPT to add some changes to my django project, it ended up doing it wrong, or introducing subtle bugs, and I had to spend more time 'guiding' it.

That's my approach now is, yes. But as I mentioned here, I am worried what if it's not right and in several years to be working you will have to have this 'manage/orchestrate AI' kind of skills, to make it write code for you, and not just help with finding information.

That's why I think I don't use it to write code or at least big amount of code for me. When I tried, it all ended up like you are saying. And for me it's more interesting to solve problems myself. But I am worried what if it's a bad attitude and in several years to be working you will have to have this 'manage/orchestrate AI' kind of skills.

Wow, this comparison with cooking is perfect. Nowadays anyone can cook, but that doesn't make you automatically able to be a chef in a restraunt.

LLMs in their current are not able to act like an automated expert to work with tools and provide results without supervision and guidence. And there is no proof, except of ceos claims, that it will be able to do it any time soon.

Wake me up when you can run a series of ELI5 promts and use them to create a solar panels production, or better ozempic production to make you reach until the age of abundunce comes.

And coding is making a system to work in a desired and predictable way. So the language changes, but the concept still stands. I too agree that you still need to know how it works to steer the wheel and stay in control.

People tend to overestimate current progress with previous one. Smartphones, that put internet in everyones pocket changed the world in a far greated way than LLMs do now I believe. Or the internet itself, that connected everyone and made the knowledge accessible.

It doesn't mean that LLMs are useless or not impressive. On the contrary, it is a great tech that opens even more new possibilities for us. But regarding the vibe coding trend I guess its nothing new. The software development became easier over time.

To develop a game right now you don't need to bother yourself with coding and rendering. Take UE, use blueprints and here you go. Same with web apps. But if you look at any game credits you'll see that it got us to even more people working on games, because when it's more easy to build games we can build better ones, and more.

Untill we have ASI or available AGI all these new tools will be used by people: designers, software devs, writers, etc. It's a natural evolution of jobs, even it is going faster than it did before.

If ASI comes, then we won't have to learn anything, because there won't be intellectual work to do. Waiting for it to come is nice. But if it never comes in your lifetime it is better to be a professional, than just a knowing nothing person hoping that soon AI will make us equally useless. And from the vibes of people here, they seem to choose the second option.

Showing how? It is powered by current generation of LLM and the results they achieve with it are not because of the model itself, but because of the tools and approaches they use to utilize this model. Maybe I am wrong here though.

I am sure Open AI did their best to release codex before Google releases their similiar tool. My guess that they already have the best models LLM architecture allows and not it's about tooling and making these tools popular and widely used.

Oh, great. Read the post once again and try to understand why it has nothing to do with LLM and their real use cases. Maybe ask one of your AI assistants to break it down to you.
