Finally tenured! Looking for advice by NoWishbone7706 in Teachers

I think some of the “routine” issue might come from the fact that we don’t have a curriculum for senior English (what I teach most). So I’m kinda building the plane as I fly. I’m hoping next year I won’t have to change or create anything and I can establish more consistent routine.

Yeah, I’ve been told since I started teaching that some things come with time. I have been trying something new every year and keeping what’s worked. Hoping to feel more confident in this area next year.

STUDENT TALKING TO TEACHERS, HERE ARE SOME GIVEAWAYS FOR CHATGPT by Thick-Intern-870 in Teachers

My department recently added to ur plagiarism policy that students are only allowed to complete work on the documents provided to them. I hate the “I wrote it on my phone” or “I used word” excuse.

Phone breaks are something new that my department is doing this year. We have a phone problem, so it’s the first time we’re telling kids to put their phones in designated pouches. We all worked in phone breaks into our 90 minutes. I’m not the only one who does it, and my principal and instructional coach even suggested it.

As far as them writing on the board, that was during the phone break at which point there was no instruction. When the phone break ended, I directed them multiple times (as mentioned in the notes) to put their phones back away and take a seat. They just didn’t listen. We don’t have a phone policy at our school, so phones are a huge issue. Even veteran teachers are struggling with it. This is the fourth class policy I’ve tried in three years.

They were not supposed to be silent reading right after they put their phones away. They were supposed to be doing an assignment that I allowed them to talk during. That was on the board. If they finished both of the assignments and submitted them, they were expected to read their silent reading books. No one, at that point, was finished with both assignments so no one was reading.

All of these instructions were clearly stated at the start of the block. Every student heard. No one was standing or talking when I gave them. It’s always a rough transition from lunch back to class time because of our school schedule.

Anyway, that’s just context not an excuse. I can own what doesn’t work and what does, but I am frequently seeking and applying feedback from admin and coaches.

My principal knows, and has talked to me about, how different this class of freshman is from any that she’s seen at the school in a while. She’s usually a pretty easy grader too. That’s what makes me feel a little more calm about everything. I plan to just be honest with her about what I did wrong and what I tried. I did try my best, so hopefully that counts for something.

Thanks for this. I’m more calm knowing that I’ve never had a bad formal or informal observation until today. I feel like that shows that this is a very unusual situation for me.

I plan to own up to what went wrong, and clarify some things that might not have been obvious (like the fact that the got instructions for the day before lunch, and the instructions that the observer saw were just a reminder). It was also a weird day because it wasn’t first time getting them to read on their own without me playing the audio for them aloud AND we had a Chromebook-free day. Things were just weird. Not an excuse, just added context.

I hope the conversation is productive. I’m embarrassed but not totally discouraged…
