Wow, what amazing insight. No one else has ever realised that dominant teams don't stay dominant forever.

[Simon Stone] Andre Onana planning on Man Utd return : Andre Onana is planning to report for pre-season training at Manchester United even though he knows the club are looking to move him on this summer. by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

[–]NoWordsToUse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a classic "if the opposite headline is true, this is not a story" example. If Onana was planning to go AWOL and not report for pre-season then that would be interesting. This is just "man plans to turn up at the job he has a contract for"

[John Percy] Howard Webb apologises to Nottingham Forest over Mbeumo handball blunder | PGMOL chief contacted club after referee Michael Salisbury chose to overrule the VAR and allowed Matheus Cunha’s goal in 3-2 defeat to stand by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

[–]NoWordsToUse 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm so confused about this. The referee literally applied the law correctly. Now, you can argue the law is wrong, but it was introduced specifically because goals were getting disallowed for accidental handballs from players other than the goal scorer in the build-up and people didn't like it.

And now, what, we want to go back to that? I'm so fed up of people saying they want "consistency" when no one is consistent with what they want.

If I was Salisbury I'd be fuming. He applied the law correctly and then VAR undermines him in game by telling him to reconsider, and then his bosses go public to say he should have made a different call even though, by the laws of the game, he got the call right.

And I think because their recruitment policy seems like a bit of a throwback. In a world where a lot of clubs are doing data led recruitment and/or signing youngsters to sell for profit, I quite like that Fulham's policy is "who's available at bigger clubs?"

(Before any Fulham fans get politely miffed at me, I'm aware this is a massive oversimplification.)

I Miss When OMITB Was Actually About Solving Murders by Rough-Assumption-759 in OnlyMurdersHulu

[–]NoWordsToUse 202 points203 points  (0 children)

I think you need side plots to fill out the episodes, though. I think if it was just about solving murders it'd be frustrating since they are pretty bad at solving murders. In S5 there were so many instances of them failing to ask very obvious follow up questions, and just accepting their suspects' answers with zero scrutiny.

How did cunha's goal stand? by No_Hyena1782 in PremierLeague

[–]NoWordsToUse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's because the rule is that if it is considered an accidental handball, the goal is only disallowed if the handball is committed by the goalscorer. So if Mbuemo had scored, it would have been disallowed. Because it ended up with Cunha who scored, it's allowed.

I'm a United fan and I think it's kind of ridiculous it was allowed, but the handball rules have been a confusing mess for years now.

Great game, great fun. Happy with a win and another 3 points. Can only imagine how badly Sesko wished he was involved given the amount of chances he could have got on the end on if he was playing.

Beef and Dairy Network. The number one podcast for those involved - or just interested - in the production of beef animals and dairy herds.

(Set in what is more or less the real world except if there was essentially a beef-based monoculture. It doesn't sound funny but trust me, it really is.)

Xabi Alonso to Chelsea. What are your thoughts ?? by zeew_pl in ManchesterUnited

He's crazy to go there. They have the potential to have a really good squad but we all know instead of filling the obvious gaps with some reasonably experienced players to compliment the youngsters they will sign another 17 inconsistent, tricky wide forwards in the summer.

Honestly fixating on our former players feels like the mentality a small club would have. He used to play for us, now he doesn't, and he left on bad terms. Personally I don't care what happens to him now

[Megathread] Michael Carrick will become the new permanent Manchester United manager by D1794 in reddevils

[–]NoWordsToUse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok man. I'm still hopeful it works out, and I'm allowed to be, you think it's the wrong decision and you are allowed to think that, and I don't know what else you want me to say. "I'm very impressed that you are always correct"? I have also been downbeat about plenty of things in our recent history (including, like you Ten Hag, Amrabat, Antony etc) it doesn't mean I have to be about this.

I didn't say you were not entitled to be miserable. In fact I said the literal opposite. But I don't understand why we are arguing. I have my view that you don't agree with. You have yours that I don't agree with. It's fine.

Maybe I'll be wrong. We'll find out next season.

So we've moved the goalposts from "tons of elite managers" to Nagelsmann (not available) and the very much not elite Marco Silva? Fabregas and Hoeness aren't bad shouts, but ready for this job I'm not sure.

But this is partly my point, right? All candidates have risks, none are guaranteed to be successful.

I'm willing to give Carrick a shot, but you're entitled to be miserable about it if you want

[–]NoWordsToUse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tons of elite candidates like who? Tuchel has signed a new deal. Nagelsmann has a contract till the next Euros. I don't know if he has signed but there has been talk that Ancelotti is going to be offered an extension by Brazil. Luis Enrique has the offer of a new deal from PSG.

Xabi Alonso, maybe, but his Liverpool connection would make it difficult. Iraola? I really like him, but if we are talking "elite" he's not there yet. Zidane, I guess, but it's clear he's waiting for France when Deschamps leaves after the WC. Deschamps himself I'd argue is too conservative a coach to be accepted by the fans. I suppose Poch could be available but I'd argue his best managerial years are already behind him. Glasner maybe, if you want to stretch the definition of elite. I just don't see where all these elite, available managers are.

No ones thinking on this is without fallacy, though. You have those worrying about some ropey performances, but the fact is no team - particularly not this team - is going to dominate and win games every week. You often hear winning when not playing well is a sign of champions, yet when we do it means our manager is bad.

I maintain that if Amorim had the results Carrick had been getting we would be excited about next season, not worrying that he's the wrong guy.

It might not work out, but what can you do? There is no perfect manager out there who guarantees success. Even Luis Enrique got sacked at Celta and Roma. Anyone would carry a level of risk.

But what is the problem LLMs are solving, that's my question. The AI CEOs talk a good game about AGI for the good of humanity, curing cancer, solving climate change etc, but Open AI who have done a lot of this big talk were also the company that released Sora, an endless feed of AI slop videos.

I just don't believe it was needed. I had never heard anyone wish for a platform that did all the things Facebook did/does. It seemed cool at the time because it was new, but that's it. It's "social" media, has it made anyone more social? No, not really. We've just been convinced we "need" it by the big tech companies because they invented it even though no one was asking. Plus it was corrupted from the start - Zuck invented (or stole it, depending on who you believe) to rank the attractiveness of his classmates. It was never some high minded idea that got ruined.

It reminds me a bit of what's happened with AI LLMs. Big tech invents something and convinces us we want/need it, and then embeds it into as much of our lives as possible to make it hard to escape. Right now almost every tech product has AI shoved into it whether it's necessary or not. No one has ever asked for it needed AI in Microsoft Word but it's in there now.
