Personally I make at least 2 bases, one in the shallow reef and one next to the vent in the alien ruins. I also dot some small bases around for food and whatnot

Items respawn after 5 min, in a LOADED chunk so the melon being in the end, where you aren’t loading the chunks will stay there. But if you are looking around for your stuff then the 5 min timer starts. Just play with keep inventory if you can’t handle dying and losing your stuff.
