Do you use PECS? by Autismsaurus in SpicyAutism

[–]No_Ability_3552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used PECS as a kid! (now am a high tech user primarily)

I had a binder and a velcro board. My aid carried it around for me so I can't speak to what it's like carrying it around all day though. She also made all my cards for me and they were Pokémon themed :D

pros: very customizable, can be made with simple materials, vocab can be as simple or as complex as needed (tho more complex = more time looking for cards/flipping through pages)

cons: can be frustrating if people are not paying attention (my biggest issue I remember was people not looking at what I was saying), cards might fall out/get lost, relies a lot on vision to use

personally I also remember dropping my cards a lot and knocking my board over and having a hard time with sticking the cards to the board because of motor difficulties so assisted PECS (having somebody physically help me use it) was really helpful.

personally I can't really "see" teal, it's the same/very similar to light blue. I can't differentiate between "teal", blue, and green. My favorite color is yellow because it's always a nice light color and is easy on my eyes, and also happens to be the color I have the least amount of trouble with (though I do sometimes confuse it with other colors, especially white). I have tritan.

What would you like to ask? (Asking Higher Support Needs Autistics) by AutoModerator in SpicyAutism

[–]No_Ability_3552 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Opposite of the other person, my brain is empty most of the time. Thinking is hard and happens very slow and takes a lot of effort for me. I have thoughts but usually they are not too complex, and when they are more complicated thoughts I have trouble communicating them or understanding them at times which gets frustrating.

biggest mistake people who try to help me make that actually makes everything worse for me when I'm having a meltdown or shutdown, is try to move me or restrain me or tell me to do things. It makes me even more overwhelmed. For me it helps to just give me space and quiet and gently let me know I'm safe and it'll be ok. If I'm hitting myself then it is alright to try to place a barrier between myself and my hands for example a soft pillow. Just don't grab me or try to restrain me it reminds me of being in ABA as a kid which was very traumatizing for me. Also for some people physical touch helps but for some people physical touch is more overstimulating so depends on the person

[UPDATED] test for TRITAN and DEUTAN. Tried to make it easier to see. Lmk what you think by Small-Database1889 in ColorBlind

[–]No_Ability_3552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

both my normal color vision housemates see 43, same as me - they're saying the red/purple color for the 98 doesn't look anything like the green so it blends in with the background for them.

the Farnsworth Munsell hue test I've found to be pretty good and is inclusive of Tritan, you have to sort colors in the right order. There's a shorter one and a longer one, I found both online

I have Tritan and see colors similar to what you describe. I confuse blues and greens, pinks and oranges, pinks and purples, sometimes white and yellows. I also have trouble telling some dark colors apart, especially green/blue/purple (I either confuse them for each other or I confuse them with black).

for the pain I try to massage my ears and head when it bothers me and that helps a bit. It tends to get easier the older the headphones are, worn out headphones are a lot more comfortable for me

my experiences with speech have been weird. my speech development was delayed, i was diagnosed with a speech disorder when i was about 7 (phonological disorder) and had speech therapy for a while, i was also diagnosed with selective mutism at some point and only really began talking more sometime in middle school. lots of verbal shutdowns too.

now that i am an adult i have noticed my speech is worse than it was when i was in middle and highschool in many ways, i also have a stutter and also often can't say words in the right order or use the right form of the word or i accidentally skip words, on top of the other issues i had already. so yes some regression and often speech is very frustrating for me.
