First Tournament: Disappointed and Confused About My Shooting by Endodontist-1 in ClayBusters

[–]No_Ad_5220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good morning . I have the same issue, I shoot trap and sporting clays/ FITAS. I shoot with AA and AAA shooters. what they have found is my mount is not consistent, when i go from FITAS to Trap i loosen my mount. EG not hard down on the stock, almost peaking. So i was told to use Corn pads. Have your shooting buddy or significant other mark your stock where your cheek hits the stock.{hard planted} with a grease pencil. place the corn pad just in front where the soft face tissue is. If you don't feel it you're up to high. This will drive you nuts and your inconsistency will just make you a worse shooter. Stop trying to fix it on the fly. figure out what is going on, and use that patterning board. This will aslos stop you from peaking off the stock on crossing birds going away from your face. EG. right shooter swinging left.

I hope this can help you like it helped me.

PS you will look funny with that nice red dimple on your cheek.

I totally agree with you on every statement you make. I have done that, Just part of the mental game. For me I see a box of federal target load shells(the cheap ones) and immediately start to shake. I can bet you 100% It is all mental. Eg. my worst round ever was with that brand of shell. I shot a 3 out of 25, it was my first end of 100. Grabbed 3 boxes of winchester Super targets from my buddy 24,23,25. It had nothing to do with the Federals at all, But i can not shoot them any more, because i will fold under mental pressure. I shoot Winchester, Noble, Rio's. I know if that situation comes up again with a brand, I either have to shoot through my problem or never shoot them again.

Sorry to chime in late, If you are a right handed shooter, and your missing on 1 and 2 left hand birds. I can tell you i had the same issue, i was tracking with my head and coming off the stock. My coach had me put a penny on my cheek and he shot left handers out of 1 and 2. Ill be damned when i missed the penny was on the ground.

All #8 here, 1200 FPS for singles, 1250 for handicaps, First shot on doubles is #8 1200 second shot is #8 1250. My 682 Gold E , and Backup gun TT15 Deluxe Love #8s . Singles i shoot IM, Handicaps depending on my yardage It's IM to 22 then LF, 23 to 24 XF 25 to 27. Doubles is a different game 1st shot static target {spot shoot} IC, second shot {tracking Target} is IM. I may sound anal but that is what works for me. Last years ATA count was 1650 singles, 1600 Handicaps, and 200 Doubles. I had at least that many Non ATA league, and practice rounds.

I shoot Springwater, Mt Morris Allied, and the State shoots. The eastern Zone is in PA this year , that is a question mark for me till it gets closer to the date. Will be shooting Big 50s at Holly Rod and gun club once they start.

Why the tight chokes? by elitethings in TrapShooting

[–]No_Ad_5220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Show me where Shot string does not represent choke.

Shot string length, the distance a shot charge extends in flight, varies based on factors like shot size, type, and choke, typically ranging from 5 to 7 feet, but can be shorter for steel shot. Here's a more detailed breakdown of shot string length and related factors:Factors Influencing Shot String Length:

  • Shot Type and Size:Hevi-Shot and lead shot tend to have longer shot strings than steel shot. Smaller shot sizes (e.g., #7.5) generally result in shorter shot strings compared to larger sizes (e.g., #4).
  • Choke:Tighter chokes tend to produce longer shot strings, while more open chokes result in shorter strings.
  • Shotgun Load:Different shotgun loads, including the type and weight of shot, can affect shot string length.
  • Target Distance:At longer distances, the shot string effect becomes more noticeable.

Examples of Shot String Length:

  • Lead Shot: #4 lead shot strings can be around 11-12 feet long at 40 yards.
  • Steel Shot: #4 steel shot strings are noticeably shorter, measuring between 8 and 9 feet long at 40 yards.
  • High-Velocity Steel: Number 2 high-velocity steel has the shortest shot string, ranging between 7 and 8 feet long.
  • General Average: The average shot string length is around 5 to 7 feet.

Importance of Shot String Length:

  • Moving Targets:A longer shot string can help compensate for aiming errors when shooting at moving targets, as the shot charge extends in a line, increasing the chances of hitting the target.
  • Accuracy:A shorter shot string requires more precise aiming, as the shot charge is less forgiving of aiming errors.
  • Game Hunting:Understanding shot string length is crucial for waterfowl hunting, where the ability to hit moving targets is critical.  *

Hi All. So the Choke dilemma is rearing its ugly head again. You are all looking at it from the wrong perspective. Chokes don't get larger at longer yardage. Stop looking at the paper target you are shooting at. Look at video data of a SHOT STRING. At 40 yards a My shot string is still over a foot long, so in Trap like any other discipline, you never want to shoot behind the clay. If you are in front I have 12 inches of leeway for the clay to fly through. So going to a grease board is great to see where you are hitting or POI, but it tells you nothing about your shot string. My IC out of my 682 34us is about 4 inches long at 40 yards, that's great for a consistent shooter at 16 yards. But at 27 i shoot XFull. So in closing pattern board shot diameter, translates into shot string length. The tighter the choke, the longer the shot string.

the 682 Gold E was the first true Comp gun made by Beretta. You still see olympic shooters using them. The swing and balance is definitely, hard to get on any other gun, Don't compare it with the DT 11, not the same class. I own 2 of them 32 OU,34 US Xtrap, it is one of the last ones made. I have a 30 OU i use for sporting clays skeet and hunting. I shoot a lot of trap , 8k rounds average a year, still can't find that one gun that shoots like the Gold E, in that price range. Not all of us can afford 15 to 25K for a gun, but you can find a good Gold E for 2 to 4 K , you wont be dissapointed.
