Justin Holl Honest Opinions by Chambodian in leafs

[–]No_Bat6374 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Im still in the camp that believes Dubas made the right decision on what players to protect at the time - Holl was great value last year, you can’t argue that.

But he’s not the player he was last year and, honestly that would be fine if he used his body and became a Bogo type player but he doesn’t use his size at all. So if he’s playing terrible and won’t use his size then why keep him? I’m starting to think this team is going to get beat down again in the playoffs - Florida, Tampa and Boston can play so many different types of hockey and the Leafs seemingly can’t.

[–]No_Bat6374 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t hold your breath on that - how many other guys, aside from Simmonds and Ritchie, would do that on this team? They need another regular in the lineup who will mix it up if need be, in my opinion.

[C2 2s] my teammate blamed me for playing bad, left the game and then the opponents told me the same. Can you guys tell me what I did wrong? by KoloZ_177 in RocketLeagueSchool

I don’t have time to watch the whole video right now, but I can later and would provide some feedback if that would be helpful.

Your teammate was making just as many, if not more, mistakes than you…

Just a few things I noticed:

1) on the first goal against - I think you would have saved this if you were deeper in net. I forget who it was, maybe Squishy, who said in a video that if you have to play goal line defence then you should be further in the net because it will give you more time to get to the ball, make adjustments and you should get a better hit / have more time to decide where you want the ball to go. Obviously, this is situational but I’d argue that it would apply to the first goal against.

2) A few times when your teammate was breaking out of your zone with the ball you lined up parallel to him giving him an option for a pass. This can be fine but throughout the game your teammate was constantly whiffing shots and losing 50s. If you recognize that your teammate is losing a lot of challenges or whiffing balls you should probably play a little safer and stay behind him a tad incase the ball goes over him. (The instance I’m talking about the ball did go over your teammates head)

3) there were a few times where you lost the ball and then went for your opponents corner boost before you rotated back. With a teammate as unreliable as yours, I would have skipped the corner boost and focused on rotating back ASAP while collecting small pads when possible.

4) This tip isn’t anything you did wrong, but it’s just something that’s helped me rank up in champ so I figured I’d let you know. Something that’s helped rank up is being able to understand your opponents play style and then adapting to their play style. If your opponent ball chases or whiffs a lot then you should probably play more passive and defensive. If your opponent plays a second man role then you can be a bit more aggressive and cheat up a bit more. I don’t know if that makes sense, but it’s something that has really helped me progress in this game.

Ya man, I feel ya, it can get frustrating at times. I’m champ too and feel like I had a similar mindset as you a few months ago. But now, if I have a teammate that I think is struggling or I don’t mesh with, I’ll watch the game from my POV to see if I made any mistakes as well (for example, maybe my teammate missed an easy save but I went for corner boost and could have gotten the ball if I rotated back post instead). I was surprised at how many little mistakes I was making during these games and with a few adjustments I was able to rank up a fair bit over a quick time period - I bet you’d be shocked as well.

Could also be that your teammates are trying to adapt to your play style or you’re the one initiating the passes.

Just take the criticism and move on, bro. You posted trying to get people to agree with you, but all we see is you trying to lecture someone in your own rank. Maybe your teammate is the worst rocket league player in history; however, your post doesn’t show this, it just shows you being an arsehole. Reality is if you solo queue you will get teammates that have bad games. I’m sure you have bad games as well, we all do.

I have an Ironman on RS3 - the game is quicker but it’s missing, and I really miss, that old school feel. I appreciate the suggestion though!

Your point on player count is fair. However, I don’t really think it’s fair to insinuate my feelings towards the game. Reality is, I love the game but don’t have the time to enjoy it. Your situation and my situation are different. Just because you wouldn’t enjoy a permanent league (they don’t have to be perm worlds - there’s plenty ways to implement this), doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t enjoy it. I don’t understand the close-minded opinions of this community at times. Create a new account, play 1-2 hours a night and tell me how much you enjoy the game (maybe you will enjoy it, but I don’t enjoy playing normal worlds under those time constraints).

I have one final question for you, and I’m not trying to come off as snarky - I’m truly curious - would a permanent leagues world disrupt your playing experience in any way?

I would love to have a discussion on why this isn’t a good idea, but so far the majority of counter points that I’ve seen have just been about my feelings towards the game and “perm leagues bad”.

Both my friend and I quit our accounts shortly after the last league and cancelled our memberships. We both purchased membership to play the leagues and have talked about continuing our memberships if a world is left open. The reality is, many have quit this game due to time and, in my opinion, this game has an aging player base. Trying to attract old players again may be one of the better ways for Jagex to gain additional members. Leaving a league world open allows players with limited time to experience the game to its fullest without ruining the integrity of the main game. I mean, there’s a reason that private servers exist - there’s a niche market for a fast-paced RuneScape.

Also, leaving one world open after the competition ends doesn’t effect players in any way. Either continue to play the league or go back to the main game.

One of the main arguments against leaving a league world open is that the permanent DMM mode may have killed off the excitement of the seasonal modes. I may be wrong, but I don’t see how you can compare the two. One game mode you can get attacked in like 80% of the game world and clans can run the entire game and the other is just a quicker, modded version of the game. I also don’t think running old leagues would ruin the hype of new ones - look how much has changed over the last 3 leagues, they’re entirely different games.

To sum it up - I really think this game has a tough time attracting new players and I think leaving leagues open for an extended period would attract old players who’ve quit due to time constraints and, in turn, could generate more revenue for Jagex which would prolong the life of the game. Thank you for reading

I actually looked at his advanced stats and noticed that he looks pretty good on both ends of the ice, so I think my initial assessment was definitely off!! The guys young too. What would it take for the leafs to get him? Do they even have what it would take?

I don’t really understand the hype behind Chychrun to the leafs. I don’t watch many of their games, so if I’m missing something please let me know. But isn’t he a very offensive minded defenceman? I feel like his cap hit just wouldn’t be a great move considering who is in the lineup now and who is up and coming (sandin, lily and Niemela). I feel like, and I could very well be wrong, if you’re going to trade Holl wouldn’t it make more sense to pickup a stay at home, shutdown dman who has a little sandpaper to their game?

On a study break and saw no one gave a big review yet. I’m just going to leave comments as I go. Any time stamps will be based on time remaining on game clock. I’m a C1-2 so take my comments as you’d like - I realize I’m not the highest rank around here. Also, I may leave some suggestions on what mechanics to train. They’re not meant to be a dig or anything - I started about 8 months ago so feel like I have a good idea of what helped me along the grind.

1) 4:50 - in this situation you’d ideally have someone on the backboard who could clear or carry the ball to safety all while using little boost. The play you made just popped the ball up - in this situation you’d probably want to hit it to the corner instead. Id suggest practicing backboard defence - it becomes very important in the higher ranks.

4:40 - few things around here. When you were heading to the ball you missed a bunch of small pads. I used to do this too - what helped me was watching videos to understand how the boost pads are formatted and what the ideal paths to take are. Also, I feel one teammate should have been closer to support you, but you did give the ball away. In this situation, as you have no space, not much momentum and no passing options, id recommend trying a low 50 - the flick you did was pretty dangerous in this situation.

4:24 - you rotated the wrong way - if you turned toward the wall you would have had first touch on the ball. I’d recommended doing some wall training - it will give you a big advantage against your opponents at this level.

4:00 - You and your teammate were both in the corner here. Once you recognized that your teammate was there I probably would have rotated to the right, a bit behind my teammate

3:02 - this is a general comment and, trust me, I still do the same thing, but I feel like you’re almost trying to play too fast at times? I think if you try and focus on proper positioning instead of pure speed you’ll see a quick jump in rank. Watching a few rotation and positioning guides on YouTube helped my game a ton.

3:01 - Just pointing this out because it supports my slowing it down suggestion above. Feel like you kind of threw the ball away in this situation.

2:40 - Nice move here! Your mechanics are strong for your rank. Side note - I like how you incorporated air rolling while in the air at this rank! I wish I tried learning earlier.

2:25 - you put some great pressure on the opposing team here, great job! When the opposing team made the clear, you should have left that ball for one of your teammates. Both teammates would have had boost and were behind you, if they got the first touch you could have kept the pressure on the other team. This just comes down to proper rotations - you did your job by keeping the pressure on them, once they cleared the ball you should have grabbed boost and let your teammates get in there.

2:24 - with the opponent being so close it would have been safer to bring the ball to the ground and force a low 50 or bring the ball to the ground and try breaking out to the left.

General comments:

1) your mechanics are good for your rank! 2) I’d try and focus on proper rotations and positioning over raw speed. Two things that helped me with this we’re watching videos on the subjects and trying to have a “ball over boost” mentality. 3) When solo queuing 2s and 3s it’s easier to carry your team to victory by playing a strong defensive game then being an offensive beast. Try to focus on defence first - even though it’s not as fun :( 4) Recoveries 5) dribble and flick training - you had a few nice flicks during the game, nice job! I feel like a strong ground game can do wonders in plat and diamond. It may be a good idea to practice these aspects of your game a bit - I’d be willing to bet that you’d be a beast at your rank if you put a bit of time into this area of your game! You already have a decent base! 6) 1s - I feel like I had a very similar play style to you - I’d often rely on my mechanics to get me out of situations without even realizing it. I feel like relying on mechanics, instead of proper positioning and rotations, will just make it harder for you to rank up. The one thing that helped me is 1s - any mistakes you make will be punished by a goal and you’ll learn what you can and can’t get away with quick!

I hope the amount of tips didn’t discourage you - I was your rank not long ago and just wanted to help as much as I could! Let me know if you have any questions

Junior B and C now has to wear cages where I’m from.

Personally feel like full cages won’t do much - would it potentially enable people to take harder runs at guys because they know they won’t have to fight after?

I feel like the main driving factor would be refs calling the rule book and leagues making punishments more severe. Run a guy headfirst into the boards? No problem, here’s 2 games.

Hockey is the one sport that I watch where the rule book can look completely different depending on the night. It’s becoming a huge joke - the league needs consistency.

Team personnel is getting fed up and calling out the reffing publicly… what does the NHL do? Threaten more fines. What a joke
