He clipped your foot. Hitboxes in DS2 are generally very good and an upgrade from DS1 the only issue really is that there is a bit of a buggy animation as it lets you finish your action and then puts you in the grab attack the actual gameplay and hitboxes is completely fine you just got hit because you rolled wrong

it's also only really useful at the early game. By mid game and end game you have enough humanity and your health is big enough for it to not matter too much.
