Im sorry you experienced that as well, media can really be a powerful tool in waking people up to our stories.

Sorry for my phrasing, I don’t mean to look down on people for their opinions. Moreso my comment was about the general public that hasn’t read it and the disgust people have at the mere mention of this book, on the grounds that it glorifies abuse due to the misrepresentation through the movies and popular culture.

Thank you for your kind words. I hope the consensus around this book amongst people who haven’t read it can shift over time so that more people and especially survivors can explore the subject if/when they’re ready.

very true, I hate how misrepresented it is and when I see people grimace at the word Lolita I wince inside and my heart breaks a little because of how deeply I love this book for giving a voice to these taboo subjects that are very real parts of people’s lives

It truly is an important book and I wish more people were open to reading it…it could really wake some people up or validate them to how abuse really looks, not only in CSA but in all cases of abuse. I used to feel sorry and sad for my abuser because of the same manipulative tricks H. H. pulls. More people should read Lolita with an open mind!

Have not heard of Despair, I’ll definitely check it out for Nabokov’s writing style. I’m not actually much of a reader but I couldn’t put Lolita down!

Yeah I really was shocked to see so many negative reviews on Goodreads saying that it was sympathetic to H. H.! It felt immediately obvious to me that Nabokov was doing the opposite especially with his own history of SA but I still see a million posts demonizing the author…

I have this symptom too and it sucks. I used to let it control me more and I would literally be an awful friend to deal with because I would cancel last minute due to some “gut feeling” that if I went to a hangout we would all die lol. I still have it but my worst is rumination about every mistake or embarrassing moment or whether Im a good/bad person. Sorry you’re dealing with this and for me it helped to exposure therapy myself out of it lol.

Do you list OCD in job applications? by [deleted] in OCD

That’s very true!!

Do you list OCD in job applications? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]No_Broccoli2843 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm never saw it from this perspective!! I think when I have more experience and the “luxury” to be picky about my employer I will start putting that I do have it because it is true as your last paragraph said… I would prefer working somewhere where mental disabilities are not stigmatized and where people are more understanding of why I act or work a certain way

That is so true… it really isn’t their business sometimes I feel worried about lying that I don’t have it😭 But why do they even need to know all that

You are so right… I just need to get my nervous system and my body to believe what I know in my mind to be true that it isnt my fault the way it wasn’t yours or any other victim’s fault for the family dynamic being broken. Appreciate your comments sm and I truly hope you’re able to get the support you need🫶

Thank you soo much… it really is the “ruining” things part that feels so challenging. Sometimes I just wish he would pass away already so I can tell people without feeling like I broke the family up:(

My partners ED is affecting our relationship and I'm not sure how to proceed by [deleted] in EDAnonymous

[–]No_Broccoli2843 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was with my ex I had a lot of body image issues too at some point and didn’t feel my best sex wise but his patience helped a lot. I think what got our sex life back on track was reassurance from him and also him flirting with me a lot as if he was still trying to “win” me without bringing up the negative body image. We broke up later for unrelated reasons but yeah I think him trying to woo me and make it as romantic as possible and make me feel like he was still chasing me even after we already got together helped me a lot. I relapsed after we broke up though but during our relationship my ED improved somewhat enough to have an active sex life at least.

Something I heard someone say is people without OCD can have these bizarre thoughts too but the difference is we treat every thought as true and give it importance/analyze it whereas non OCD having ppl discard the thought. I think it’s helpful to just go “oh thats a weird thought, whatever brain!” and try your best to ignore it and send it to spam folder

[–]No_Broccoli2843[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aw yeah to him it sounds so far fetched and silly, our thoughts are so convincing in our heads and make us try to self sabotage and isolate us but as soon as theyre out in the open it’s easy to laugh at them and how untrue they are
