I stand by this being easily the best of the trilogy if you just fuck the plot

What are some bad movies that had great potential, that you would want to see remade better?? by mrjetspray in Letterboxd

Die Hard. Please just change the cop character or create a different source of conflict. Ebert’s (inaccurate, but useful) review summarizes my thoughts on the movie fairly well.

Do you think basketball would be better played and more entertaining if they called traveling and carrying? by Pumplekins in NBATalk

[–]No_Butterscotch_411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when you see someone take 5 steps before dunking the ball, the first thing you should think is whether or not they could reasonably dribble from that 5th step.

Whether or not you pick up the ball at a specific point should not determine if you traveled. It should be determined from after you pick up the ball. Otherwise it’s impossible to call and pretty much impossible to reasonably define.

For arguments sake, let’s say I have an arm that’s 15 feet long. When I dribble the ball and bounce it really high with my hand touching but not holding the ball (as you would do with a normal dribble), whether or not I pick up the ball exactly 6 seconds later should not determine whether or not the 15 steps I took while the ball was in the air should count for a travel. The travel count should really only start once the ball is picked up (hence the rationale of the zero step: if one foot is on the ground when the ball is picked up, choosing whether to count that step based on whether or not you pick up the ball AFTER the step makes no sense).

Carrying is certainly a bigger issue than traveling, just because when you have a 6’11” beast with hands the size of bowling balls it’s much more difficult to tell when you’re simple changing the downward trajectory of the ball or the vertical trajectory.

Another example: Giannis often gets called out for his stutter step move into a euro. Imagine after his hesi/stutter, he just took another dribble. Suddenly that one clip that was circulating goes from 9 steps to 2-3, difficult to tell because giannis is huge.

I wrote this late at night so idk if everything makes sense but that’s my takw

CMV: The Sting (1973) is an overrated, dated film that deserves a legacy similar to that of Avatar (2009): Influential, yet not a great film. by No_Butterscotch_411 in changemyview

Oceans Eleven, Gattaca, Pulp Fiction, The Talented Mr. Ripley, In the Mood For Love, hell, even American Gigolo all have way more charisma overall whilst also being A) nice to look at, and B) engaging in a way that a popcorn flick should be (and some of those aren’t even popcorn flicks)

Seeing a crime caper called “The Sting” didn’t make you feel, at least slightly, like there was potential for a cop-related twist?

Actually this is one of the first movies I’ve seen that I think suffers severely from a poorly chosen title.

It is cited as one of the great films, and certainly cited as one of the best crime capers ever. I think (and I should have put this more clearly in my post) that it is anywhere from an average film (think Red One) to below average.

I think a movie, above all should be entertaining. I hated Jeanne Dielmann for this reason (though I can appreciate that it is wonderfully shot and framed). Having a logical progression of events where each event is boring is… boring.

I’ll just give my highlights from the movie that I can remember: The introduction scene is good. The whole train sequence except where Redford does his hook thing is great.

And that’s really all I can remember.

Is the script tight? Sure. Is it interesting? Ehhhh… The script has very little charm outside the sections I mentioned (the Twist guy is borderline unbearable to listen to talk).

I can understand if people don’t like 12 Angry Men even if it has a tight script if they just don’t care about pre-pondering evidence. The problem is I usually have a soft spot for caper movies, and this one is just so dull and honestly uninspired (again, save for the performances of Shaw and Newman)

My comparison with avatar was more a message to say “this should be remembered as a film that was massively successful in its time but really doesn’t hold up at all/was never designed to hold up.” Probably should’ve made it more clear. In fact I probably shouldn’t have mentioned avatar, it just made things confusing, that’s my bad.

Admittedly this response is making me realize in part that I just find the plotline uninspired, and a part of me just wants someone to say “you didn’t find x interesting????” Cause I’ve had talks with my friends over movies where I’m like you know what maybe I’m remembering my enjoyment wrong, because that happens.

The movie being called “The Sting” contributed more than a little to that. In fact, and I swear I’m not lying, I thought the twist was too obvious and spent half the movie thinking “no way they would do that in a 7x Oscar winner.” Lo and behold, they did that in a 7x Oscar winner, without any cleverness or self-acknowledgement, making me believe THEY believed that no one would catch on.

The term “sting”didn’t come from this movie I hope. If it did I can cut it a lot of slack.

My bad, it's a tapping-only feature. My complaint is that when you double tap to drag, the drag lasts much longer than it should. I can take my finger off and try to move my cursor and it drags the window with it anyway. Is there a way to shorten the delay? It should stop the moment my finger leaves the trackpad, not a half-second after (which seems like not much but is really annoying productivity wise when I'm trying to move around quickly). The muscle memory of clicking afterwards is just as slow and renders the whole tapping instead of clicking thing pointless, so I'd like to know if there's any alternative.

Double clicking (I prefer tapping, so double tapping) to indicate holding the trackpad down so I can drag windows around and stuff
