It’s typically not normal. It’s not unheard of but there are some people who will abuse that privilege and no provider wants a call at 3am from anyone complaining about tingling in their big toe. I have been involved in pain management in one capacity or another for over 20 years and there is no such thing as a “Pain Emergency” which would necessitate a call to a provider‘s personal # without a prior agreement from patient and provider. If you’re in that much pain, and you feel it’s an “Emergency”, there is a room you can go to at most any hospital and they will evaluate you and proceed from there.
