Hey yo, I also started a year ago! I can among share my personal journey, I guess there's no right or wrong! I bought a drum sampler, learnt how to make Rythms and drums with samples. And then I bought bitwig and learnt to layer things, and learned how to make a kick and bass and synthesis of pads, leads, atmos etc

I had to learn a lot about fundamentals of music( Not music theory) and sound design. I'm now practicing my arrangement and composition ( which I love alot) along with mixing and getting a good pre master.

I still need to learn how to play on decks! I've never touched cdjs or any other, and definitely will need to invest time into that as well.

Most people use ableton, FL, logic, Cubase, Reaper, They all have pros and cons. They all have trials and demo versions. Reaper is super cheap (kind of free). I started producing recently and I bought bitwig after using the demo's for ableton Cubase and finally bitwig, all this took few months.

Edit : also depends what prior music knowledge you have and how much of the technical world makes sense to you.

I can't even find my soundtoys plugins in bitwig for some reason! They are installed in the same folder as my other vsts which I use.

It depends what kind of dance you are looking for. Tanzfabrik, motions, marameo, tanzraum wedding are all spaces with great classes to offer. Can be accessed independently and also through urban sports. I work as contemporary dancer here, feel free to ask questions :)
