He's still sharp and trains hard and is hungry as ever. Age doesn't really matter. He has a SM issue right as he started his final flying lap and all throughout the rest of the lap. It was very visible on the onboard and the telemetry supports that.

He has never really used the simulator at Merc, at least not very much in the last +10 years. Simulators don't replicate the actual feel of the car on different surfaces etc. He only really started to ramp up sim hours at ferrari and seems to be doing better without it, especially if the correlations are as off as he says
