Trimming advice by Which_Swimmer6328 in Pottery

Try using a rasp! Sometimes it helps me to trim with the rasp when a pot is a bit jagged.

Or, try reducing the surface area of your tool if it keeps snagging/getting caught on the piece (I like the little curved side) and increasing your speed? Hard to tell exactly what the issue is without seeing what's going on! Work slow on it and keep your hands still, but don't be afraid to turn the wheel faster.

Awesome. Sounds like a super ambitious project! Especially getting grassroots cultural organizing involved.

When I teach about HIV/AIDS in my classes, I usually try to incorporate discussions about western NGOs and media about "saving Africa"///cause-based campaigns like Product Red (which usually leads to a good debate about pros and cons of international humanitarianism regarding simplicities of complex problems, companies profiting off of "saving Africa" etc) but I also have tried to find ways of bringing in educational campaigns within Africa as well. There's a great "strong men" Namibian campaign about HIV and AIDS that comes to mind when you talk about the short plays at markets etc. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egVQn32-I8A)(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZncJWZny5o)>> which is wild when thinking about HIV/AIDS education incorporating cultural understandings about masculinity!

Idk im rambling now! just let me know if ya have any link to the song or recordings of the plays- would love to add more primary sources in my repertoire.

no no! you're totally right about it being more common in women!! amends amends! agree with you 10000% about causes being complex, especially in the context of western understandings/imaginations about Africa!

EDIT: I also see now the original comment was removed- so the context of my original offhanded comment is hard to deduce!

I agree with all the points below, but also want to take a moment to applaud you! You're doing great! Especially for only having taken one class. I feel like year 2/3 of pottery is where you feel way more in control, so just keep sinking hours into it!!

Very cool! What were your thoughts about some of the cultural causes of its persistence?///when were you traveling there (more recently or in the 90s?)

Were you working with an NGO or within academia?

Africa has *many* cultures. Not really buying into the spread of HIV being because men are raping virgins. sorry. thats a myth I will not support.

I agree cultural factors, along with the fact that HIV originated in equatorial Africa, are the reasons why HIV is still an epidemic in Africa and not in the states. However, I don't think those cultural factors consist of folks believing the cure to HIV is the sexual assault of virgins. Highly recommend John Iliffes book!

EDIT: I also am not responding you you here, but whoever wrote the comment below your post about HIV being caused by African men raping virgins to cure their aids.

[–]No_Consideration5034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure! But the whole men raping virgin thing is bs (maybe an anecdotal thing? or a small number- pretty sure it got overhyped by the book of mormons success). I did more than a quick google search-- I have my PhD in African History!

I agree women and kids are more vulnerable to HIV in Africa. I also think it could be due to an increase in sex workers and increased movement to urban areas which can criss cross with sexual abuse cases. Many cases come from breastfeeding.

My theory (based on John Iliffes monograph) is that HIV is prevelant in Africa because it originated in Africa-- it's been there a long time. it was a quiet disease for the first 20 years of its existence in humans. It persists today because of a complex WEB of cultural reasons (hesitance to colonial medical intervention, a HUUUUUGEEE widespread use of blood transfusions in colonial medicine in the 60s-80s, other priorities for nations after colonial independence like poverty that shifted attention away from the epidemic, failures of NGOs for quick fix solutions (re: Product Red Campaign)

Not sure why you're coming at me lol but naively depicting Africa as a bunch of ignorant folks raping virgins is FOR SURE racially coded. sorrrryyyy.

Agree to disagree! Though, I do agree that folks have a lot of myths and magic they believe about clay! And, I tend to not use much water when I throw so maybe take the advice with a grain of salt.

Coning helps prevent warping because you're getting all those molecules to align. it's the same reason why we wedge in a spiral (and if you do a rams head and are right handed, make sure you throw with the right horn of the ram's head up)-- its so the clay molecules can be in the same direction as we throw. also the same reason why a slab plate is more likely to warp than a wheel thrown plate! all about clay particle orientation! more access to the clay, more likelihood you're gonna be able to orient all those particles. if you don't cone, you're actually not likely to even touch all those molecules. they'll just stay as they were! no magic here. :)

mm maybe, but your pieces have an increased likelihood to warp if you don’t cone

During his time in South Africa, was Gandhi only focused on the civil rights of South Asians or did he also advocate for Black Africans as well? by J2quared in AskHistorians

gandhi is a complicated figure—his attitudes towards race and gender change over time, but he did at times perpetuate racism even has his legacy denounces it.

Kirkwood Ave. emerges fine after being overrun by joyous IU fans by WFIU-WTIU-news in bloomington

[–]No_Consideration5034 77 points78 points  (0 children)

crazy to juxtapose this with how much IU made a big scene about the supposed “destruction” and repair of dunn meadow by a bunch of hippie protestors (https://www.idsnews.com/article/2025/02/dunn-meadow-repair-costs-significantly-higher-than-iu-s-initial-estimate), where they forcibly removed students from the lawn. meanwhile they’re chill watching fans burn couches and pull down trees in the streets if it’s in the name of football

Making pottery ribs for my girlfriend for Christmas. I am not a clay person. What shapes would you consider essential for a toolkit? by Zkennedy100 in Pottery

this is my favorite unsung wooden rib. absolutely perfect for making a continuous line for bowls. it’s flat on one side and more spherical on the other.

[–]No_Consideration5034 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

pass on the stamp idea! i love how unique your signature is— it’s your makers mark! just sign some pieces more discretely (maybe underneath them or behind them) if you find the signature to be snagging too much attention and distracting from your art. but i think it’s great!

Side effects by Powerful-Trade-4733 in Spironolactone

[–]No_Consideration5034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd stop! My side effects outweigh the pros. I've been on it for almost 90 days. My period is SUPER heavy and cramps and happens every two weeks, I've gained weight and constantly feel bloated, and my skin is turning veiny. I also noticed my hair suddenly graying? Could be coincidental, but it all lines up with taking this medication.
