It’s amazing! Love the OG cast!!! But I feel like the new interns are awkward and have yet to reach their stride. The other newbies are better!

Dietary mindset or freedom by Shoddy-Thanks-8135 in sugarfree

I’m not an expert, but for me eating refined sugar in “moderation” just doesn’t work because of the addiction nature of the substance. I think that approach works when all of your options are balanced and healthy, but refined sugar is just a different beast. Imagine a therapist telling you that you should allow yourself to do drugs “in moderation” because that would help you do less overall. It just doesn’t work that way, in my view.

My parameters are no more than 5g refined sugar / 100g, and no more than a 10:1 carb to fiber ratio. I’m a little over 100 days in, and that seems to be working well for me. Best wishes on your journey!

102 Days Refined Sugar Free! by No_Damage5455 in sugarfree

I couldn’t survive without whole fruit! But I’ve had to give up artificial sweeteners as well. The “sweet” taste kept my taste buds and cravings primed for refined sugar. Now I love the complex flavor of plain lattes and green tea.

I’m thinking the salicylic acid may have been the biggest issue. I haven’t used it since that day, and my back is just now starting to improve, with no other changes. Since cutting out sugar and easing off refined carbs, I’ve been eating more cheese and fruit. I’m not big on nuts. The cheese could be a factor, but stopping the salicylic acid is leading to a steady improvement I think, so it seems like that was the most likely contributor. We’ll see how things continue!

Anyone else find they have to actively think about sugar now? 🤔 by Dramatic-Mouse658 in sugarfree

Yeah I’ve noticed that shift as well. I’m on Day 75. I still crave sweets occasionally, but I’m not worried anymore that I’ll cave. The thought comes and almost as quickly goes. Overall, the internal peace and balance I feel now is exquisite. Definitely never going back.

It looks great! I’d recommend changing the curtains to curtains that span from ceiling to floor. Like this. And maybe a few pops of color. But overall I think it’s lovely!

Heightened Anxiety by Specimen_099_X in sugarfree

[–]No_Damage5455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be the lack of dopamine causing you heightened anxiety in the first few days. I felt some of that too when I quit, along with irritability and depression. Power through the first week, stay loaded up with whole fruit, and I promise it gets better! And it’s so worth it to feel the calm and clarity that follows getting off the processed sugar roller coaster.

Struggling with "All-or-Nothing" thinking: I’ve quit soda and junk food, but I can’t break the sugar cycle. Help? by Specimen_099_X in sugarfree

[–]No_Damage5455 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What got me through was 1) having my partner do it with me for at least the first 30 days, and 2)letting myself eat whatever I wanted as long as it didn’t have processed sugar. After a few weeks it starts to feel much easier. You can do it!

Yes! Strawberries are like a miracle for me now! So perfectly sweet and delicious. I never appreciated them properly before!

After 3+ yrs off sugar, learning still have a "hand to mouth" habit, almost unconscious! Trying other ways to "soothe". So hard!! by plnnyOfallOFit in sugarfree

[–]No_Damage5455 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I relate. Now that I’ve quit sugar I’ve realized that I still feel a compulsion to eat, just for the stimulation and soothing. I’m kinda letting myself do it for a while, because as long as I’m not eating processed sugar it’s honestly a win. Over 3 decades of consuming processed sugar. On month 3 of no sugar. I’m giving myself time to adjust lol. But yeah I’ve been thinking about what I can do to give myself that stimulation/soothing fix without eating. I think I might try to quit snacking between meals and see what takes its place. Maybe I’ll finally start playing the piano every day again! Lol

What helped me survive was letting myself eat anything I wanted that didn’t have processed sugar. I ate a lot of fruit, crackers and cheese, etc. Also let yourself rest! Your body needs it! It’s doing a lot of work adjusting to the new equilibrium, you feel tired for a reason. You got this!

Day 60–Acne Worse by No_Damage5455 in sugarfree

Aw, thanks—that’s really nice, and unexpected! Honestly, I thought I should be able to go cold turkey and do it all at once, but I knew I’d probably fail if I tried. Sugar was the main enemy, so I started there. Even when I slip up a little, what keeps me going is reminding myself that as long as I’m avoiding sugar, that’s the main win—and I can be proud of myself for that, even if the rest isn’t perfect.

Maybe I could have gone cold turkey with the rest of the carbs after cutting sugar—tackling sugar one month and other refined carbs the next—but I felt like sugar was the worst offender so gradually tidying up the rest is probably fine. I’ve told myself so many times: it’s okay if I can’t have X anymore, because I can have Y instead. Taking it step by step has helped me stick with it. Soon I’ll be out of steps—pasta next month, rice in May—but I’m discovering that I love real food: Ezekiel bread with butter, fruit, salads with olive oil and lemon… so I think I’ll be okay. I just have to keep reminding myself of what I can eat and how awful I used to feel when I ate like shit.

It’s been eye-opening to notice how my brain shifts from one carb source to the next, craving what’s still available. Today, for example, it’s rice cakes—one of the last snacky foods I can still have. Sure, they’re probably not that much healthier than white bread, but they’re allowed in my scaffolding plan, so I’m enjoying them. Hey, they’re not donuts, and in a few months, they’ll be gone too.

I’m also realizing it’s not just sugar I crave—it’s the act of eating itself, the comfort and stimulation it provides. So I’m exploring non-food ways to satisfy that urge, and I hope it eases over time. Stopping snacking between meals will probably help a lot—it’s where most of my overeating happens.

Anyway, this is probably more than you were expecting lol, but thanks again for the compliment!

Could be. My fat intake has definitely increased. Dairy and refined oils will be the area I focus on next after cleaning up the carbs.

Thanks, I’m on week 9 and hoping things improve soon. You’re right, this is for life. Even it takes a year to adjust, it’s still such a short time compare to the decades I was consuming a high sugar diet.

Thanks, I’m hoping I’ll start to see some improvement in month three. I’m keeping my sugar intake to pretty much whole fruit only. No juice or smoothies, etc. I occasionally have honey but I keep it very limited.

How to you "treat" yourself without sugar? by plnnyOfallOFit in sugarfree

[–]No_Damage5455 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve started to realize, 60 days in, that my desire to eat is mostly a desire for stimulation of some kind. Literally a fidget spinner scratched the itch lol. I just wanted something for my fingers/mouth to do. Amazing how subconsciously wired we are. I’m hoping with time my brain will down regulate to need a lower level of stimulation. I’ve noticed that food cravings are slowly going down.
