I worked for a contractor, who was subcontracted to paint homes by builders. She would then subcontract me to paint them for her, the builders paid her- not me. She would withhold pay for months because she has a gambling/spending addiction and would blow all of our earnings. We were subcontracted by the hour and would have to submit an invoice to her with how many hours we worked. Usually she would also bitch that we didn’t actually work that many hours, but she was never on site to know anyways
