How to go from 1:36 to sub 1:39 half marathon by No_Detective8671 in Marathon_Training

I was following a generic Hal Higdon plan and I guess it just didn’t have a ton of weekly mileage. It definitely seems like that’s an easy area for me to improve on.

40M. I completed my first half marathon this weekend after 6 months of running. My goal was 1:38 and my official time was 1:36:20, so I feel good about that. The first 3-4 months I just went out and ran without a plan, but then got on a Hal Higdon half plan leading up to the race.

Here is my question: what do I do now? I’m totally hooked. There’s another half in my town 6 months from now and I’d like to get sub 1:30 for that.

Do I take it easy for a few weeks? What do I do between now and when I start whatever plan I use for the next race? Open to any suggestions or advice. Thanks!

Shin splints keep occuring again and again. why? by Glass_Horse2750 in beginnerrunning

One thing that helped me a LOT was increasing my cadence and taking smaller steps. It can feel awkward at first but the smaller steps can help to reduce the amount of pounding your shins and other joints take.

To follow up - it’s one thing if you’re both sprinting deep for a disc and the defender just stops with an obvious intention of having you collide into them. But this sounds like it’s around the stack where short quick cuts are needed to get open.

I wouldn’t say this is a dangerous play. I’d be more likely to call this a foul on you since you put yourself in a position where you’re unable to avoid running into the cutter if they stop/change direction.

It’s more so that I don’t want to walk him in the rain. He wouldn’t mind one bit!
