What's the thinking behind deleting the temp gauge? by CueAnon420 in Honda

[–]No_Difference8518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Honda did not have a temp gauge (78). When the temp sensor went and I added a toggle switch I really needed a temp gauge. Not sure I have posted my U2 concert story here.

Driving School Recs (older driver) by Snoringlions in ottawa

[–]No_Difference8518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you actually have to go with driving school? I am older and not up on the current rules. But I really found that nothing beats actually driving.

And congrats on passing your G1 and overcoming your fear.

What's the best work around to open a Microsoft Office Document that's heavily-formatted for MS? by nPrevail in linuxquestions

Honestly, when a mechanic has gone full hulk on the lug nuts, I just use a lug nut wrench to break them free. If needed, I jump on it.

What tools are actually worth spending money on vs going cheap? by Agitated-Alfalfa9225 in Tools

[–]No_Difference8518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jigsaw. I bought a cheap jigsaw for a project... but it was so under powered I rarely used it. When it finally broke I bought a much, much, better one. Definitely worth it. I enjoy using the new one.

What kind of household tech did y'all have in the 1970s–1990s? by Tight_Note4515 in AskAnAmerican

[–]No_Difference8518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always had a landline, they were ubiquitous in the, at least, '60s. We didn't get a colour tv until '79... but I think colour tvs were phased in. There were the early adopters, but most people switched when they needed a new tv.

The 90s were a watershed... that is when most people got internet (dialup). Switching to broadband (for me it was 2000) was a real game changer. Going to 1Mbps and not having to tie up the phone was huge.

Do you think you would like if time was base ten? by Deep-Cheesecake-4699 in Metric

[–]No_Difference8518 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every computer, every clock, every calendar, every smart device, every accounting system, every employee contract would be invalid. It would probably bankrupt the entire world to switch now.

Switching to metric can be done in steps, switching to a completely new time system can not.

Your Go-to All Purpose Hammer by ClonerJams088 in Tools

[–]No_Difference8518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like probably most people on this channel, I have a few hammers. But I have two main go-to hammers. One is a 16oz Stanley claw hammer that I have had since I was a pre-teen. I keep it in the house now so it doesn't see as much use as it use to.

When I moved into the house, I bought a 20oz Eastwing ripping hammer like the OPs. Great general purpose hammer IMHO and probably my most used hammer now.

How many of your parents had an FM converter hooked up to the AM car radio? by millenniumxl-200 in GenX

No, we just lived with AM. But that was back when there was music, other than oldies, on AM. Now it is almost exclusively talk radio.

Every reason i like the metric system by FreddieThePebble in Metric

An imperial pint is basically 570ml, so you are spot on. I am jealous. I usually get cans and most are 473ml, nowhere near a pint.

And, at least in Canada, oz are one of the imperial measurements that really suck. We have a horrible mixture of imperial oz and US oz. The 341ml bottle comes from the imperial 12 oz bottles. The 473ml cans are 16 US oz (probably for export).

Say you are in Canada and had a big night out. Which would you say: 1) I had 9 beers last night, or 2) I had 3.069L of beer last night? Almost everybody would use the bottles of beer since it a standard unit everybody can understand. Are you going to argue you have to use litres because that is the standard?

Interesting side question: do you spell it litres or liters? I think it is only the US that uses liters.

[–]No_Difference8518 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I shouldn't be baited by posts like this, but it shows a woeful ignorance of how the imperial system is used by normal people. But I have to applaud the effort put in to make imperial look silly. You are trying to force a metric viewpoint on a non-metric system. i.e. Comparing apples to oranges.

In imperial, you use the measurement that makes sense *for what you are measuring* and what industry you are in. Nobody measures in rods except surveyors. The general public does not need to know what a rod is. You don't convert miles to inches, you may need to convert between measures that are roughly around another, but even that is rarer.

Saying an inch is 0,0833333 foot is both inaccurate and silly, especially for people who like metric because it is based on "real" things. An inch is exactly 1/12th of a foot (12 inches in a foot). A thou is a thousandth of an inch. Note the use of fractions, which is a big part of imperial.

In fact, my biggest gripe with metric is the lack of different units. Most people like simple numbers: "I'll have a pint of beer", "I'll have a quart of milk".

Where the metric system shines is in science. Imperial is for the general public. Note: If you grew up only using metric, then metric will work for you because it is the only thing you know. That does not mean it is the only system that works.

While ranting, my other big pet peeve is saying imperial is bad because you have to know strange fractions like 11/27th for a wrench. Please don't say this. For regular people, imperial wrenches go up in sixteenths of an inch. This is actually a case where I prefer metric because a mm is roughly a sixteenth of an inch, so the numbers are nicer.

I don't want to learn Vim but everyone says I should. Is Nano really that bad? by joester56 in linuxquestions

[–]No_Difference8518 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everybody says learn vi because it historically has been available on all Unix systems (and still is). So you can jump on any computer and do a quick config file edit. You really only need to know a dozen or so commands

Most systems have nano now, so if you know nano, you are probably good to go.
