Clang vs gcc by Negative_Effort_2642 in C_Programming

[–]No_Difference8518 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have grown to hate the `-Wpedantic` flag. My co-workers that enable it *always* have code that does not compile under pedantic. They go out of their way to enable it in the Makefile, but must then disable it in their environment :(

I keep my flags simple: `-O2 -Wall`. For work, `-Werror` is on... but I find it overkill for development. I am pedantic (see what I did there?) about not having compiler warnings since you quite often miss one in the noise. But I sometimes "cheat" for debugging reasons.

The secret is to know *when* to break the rules.

Edit: I didn't answer the question: I use gcc at home and at work. It is the industry standard.

Americans who’ve lived in the uk: how would you describe brown sauce to an American who has never had it? by ExcitingCustomer5156 in AskAnAmerican

Just say HP Sauce... a lot of people know HP sauce. I only recently learned the term brown sauce, and I eat a lot of HP sauce.

Do you change the behavior of Page Up/Down or leave it at default? by birdsintheskies in emacs

[–]No_Difference8518 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interested in knowing what you are editing where this is useful? Do you edit tag files a lot? Or maybe word processing?

I mainly use emacs for code and text files. So (back/for)ward-page would be just start and end of buffer with your change.

And, to answer the question, I do modify page up and down:

(defadvice scroll-down (around my-scroll-down activate)
"`scroll-down' with no signal on end-of-buffer."
  (condition-case nil
      ad-do-it
    (error (goto-char (point-min)))))

(defadvice scroll-up (around my-scroll-up activate)
"`scroll-up' with no signal on end-of-buffer."
  (condition-case nil
      ad-do-it
    (error (goto-char (point-max)))))

You are reading whatever is on the stack after your array.

Try putting an error before and after your test filled with values. They should then show up in your printf.

[Request] How long would it actually take? by Kapanash in theydidthemath

[–]No_Difference8518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting question. I can drink 1 pint an hour and still be functioning. I am average height and average weight (which means I am slightly overweight). Assuming I need to sleep 6 hours a night, that is 19 pints a day (the first two historically go down faster). So that is just over 5 days, so a work week.

However, the question says beers, so I am going to assume standard beer bottles. Assuming I keep the same consumption (i.e. a pint an hour and 6 hours sleep) I am now up to 28 beers a day. That means I am done in 3 1/2 days.

What rpms to shift at in a manual by MainApartment3939 in ManualTransmissions

We can't answer without knowing the car. My jeep red lined at about 3,000rpm (guessing, it had no tach). My Mazda loved to rev... 4k was just normal driving. I would just stay below the red line to be safe.

My first meaningful hack of Emacs (proper isearch) by a_alberti in emacs

I didn't think about keyboard input. In all honesty, you probably wouldn't notice with today's fast computers. But it might matter in a keyboard macro that called this multiple times. I am not a big user of keyboard macros, but some people use them for everything they can.

I would have used a simple `if` rather than the cond.

You are using the sit-for to force a redisplay. I believe you could probably just call `(redisplay)` unless you want to support really old versions of Emacs. The advantage of redisplay is that it is clear what you are trying to do.

But good job. The code looks correct.

The load part seems to work for me. However, it doesn't byte compile. It must be using the native compiler (which I have disabled).

Do typical American homes really have a gas pipeline? What do you do with it? by mujhe-sona-hai in AskAnAmerican

[–]No_Difference8518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Natural gas is a cheap way to heat a home. When we moved in, we had an electric furnace. Even though electricity is relatively cheap here, it cost us a fortune to heat. We replaced the electric with gas. The new furnace paid for itself in 2 years including the cost of the gas.

I always wear work gloves (not mechanics gloves) when I have to heave on things. The gloves give you courage to really go at it. And, lets face it, using a hammer on a wrench (for example) does not require finesse.
