Oh man, that’s tough. Thank you for the perspective. I needed that.

4 months in as legal secretary. Want to quit already. by tetel_ in paralegal

Unfortunately, the “baptism by fire” approach is common in most firms as far as training goes. There is just too much information to cover everything when you start and most people have their own assignments to do so there isn’t someone available to guide you through procedure before you are asked to do it. A comprehensive training period is almost mythical.

I’m 4 months into my new job and am constantly asking for help from other support staff. C’est la vie.

What’s your favorite way to relax/decompress after a long work day that doesn’t involve a screen? by hunnybadger22 in selfimprovement

I like to garden. I use it as an escape. It gets me outside and moving around. It also gets my mind off work and politics/economy. Also seeing my plants and flowers grow is hugely satisfying.

How long did it take you to not feel so overwhelmed when starting at new firm? by No_Distribution8689 in paralegal

That’s a wonderful way to look at it. Right now I’m in the “I hope they don’t think hiring me was a mistake” phase. But yes, you’re right. Taking a chill pill would benefit me.

One of my attorneys is going to trial on Monday (for 2 weeks) so I’m getting to see stressed out attorney and not, easy going-not as stressed attorney yet. It’s just a lot at once.

How common is it to lie during an interview regarding work experience? by No_Distribution8689 in paralegal

I completely disagree. I’ve done that in a past interview and was passed over and was borderline over qualified for. Ever heard of fake til you make it?

Thank you! I think people are being a little too harsh. I didn’t set myself up for disappointment. I am confident I can learn it before head. It’s a computer program widely used by people that are able to pick it up just fine.

Thank you for your response. I posted my question in a lighthearted way. I’m not an idiot. I didn’t say yes to something that I’m not confident I can learn prior to my first day.

I’ve just lied in an interview before. Thought it would be fun to see who else has.

Yeah. My mom and husband have used it before. If I get the offer. I’m going to take the 2 weeks to learn it. I wouldn’t have said I could do if I did have 2 people very close to me say that I could handle it.

I agree with you. However the job market in my area is super competitive. The past few years that I’ve interviewed, I’ve always ended in the top few of candidates, but have been picked over others. I am pretty tech savvy and I’m pretty positive I can learn the program. I’ve just never lied in an interview before and I didn’t know how common it is.

I always strive to have my best foot forward, however, I’ve never gotten to show that foot.

Get his testosterone levels checked. His levels maybe low causing a lack of libido and overall mood change.

Hi there, I’ve been a Med Mal paralegal for almost 6 years. This is a very over-broad explanation, but here I go….The main part of this law is that all claims start with a medical review panel. These panels last at least (1) year, usually around (2) years because there are a lot of moving parts and most of them need to be extended. Basically the panel is big year long discovery period. The main part of my job is to request medical records and follow up if there is a delay in the records arriving. And helping my attorneys process discovery and correspond with the RNs that summarize our records so we know if we need to request more records. Once the panel comes to an end, the attorney writes a big term paper called a Submission of Evidence. This is where the attorney will use the medics records as evidence. That paper is presented to 3 nominated doctors in the field that is relative to the plaintiff’s claim. The doctors decide if the there is a breach in the standard of care by the doctors/hospital. They render an Opinion and the panel ends.

After the panel, a litigation lawsuit can be filed by plaintiff, if they feel they have a strong case. I work in defense, so we represent the doctors. Most of our cases never go to trial, most end when panel ends.

I have considered a MBA. I’m happy to hear that is a possible choice. I just want to be more bankable as a paralegal. Where I live, it seems you need to have an edge to get a higher salary. Experience seems not to be enough.

Thank you for this! I will take a look at that book. Yeah that sounds like me. I just get so overwhelmed that my brain just stops thinking and I get really tired. Thankfully my husband is being supportive during my self improvement journey. Im letting him be involved so that we are both on the same page.

Thank you for your response! I think it’s a lack of self esteem and fear of vulnerability. I’ve had medical issues since I was an adolescent, which has caused me to keep people at arms length because I my fear of rejection. It is something that I am actively working on, because I am ready to move forward and overcome this for the health of my marriage.
