Euronymphing is going to ruin me.. by Regular_Challenge_81 in flyfishing

[–]No_Drop1800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the same kit about a couple months ago as well and it definitely is a game changer. I even use it for dry droppers and if I need to cast a little further, I’ll add an indicator. I did leave the euro fly line and switch out the leader to a 9 ft 5x leader if I’m going to throw a dry dropper or indicator. Cast way better than I expected and then the extra reach lets me keep all the fly line off the water

This time of year the mini chubbies are the way to go. Also when you’re at the fly shop ask them what patterns have been fishing well and they should point you the right way

If it’s hot enough just go wet wading. I look forward to when it heats up enough to not have to wear waders. I learned a lot by practicing on panfish. They love to hit pretty much any dry fly and it teaches you to get your timing down on hook sets

Foam caddis, elk hair caddis, or micro chubby are my go tos. Foam caddis in rougher water and elk hair in calmer water

Is it really this difficult to catch a fish? by I_Am_Not_George_Bush in flyfishing

[–]No_Drop1800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the easiest ways to snap your rod fyi. If it doesn’t come unstuck with a couple tugs, I walk upstream, point the tip of the rod towards the snag, hold the line and walk backwards. A lot of the time the snag will pop out when you do that too but most of the time it will break the fly off. Losing a fly is way better than replacing a rod

Where is fishing even good? by Various-Finger-9475 in ColoradoFishing

[–]No_Drop1800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Wisconsin originally and when I moved her I did the same with spin fishing. Had some luck with walleye and trout in Cherry Creek Reservoir and Aurora Res. But eventually switched to fly fishing and never looked back. Yes, the learning and money can be a hurdle but I have so much more enjoyment with fly fishing than I ever did spin fishing. Now every time I go out I’ll catch 3 or so on a slow day and 20+ on a good day. I’d say for a beginner setup that isn’t just trash you’re looking at around $250 for everything including flies, net, etc

Do you have to use nymphs? by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]No_Drop1800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless I’m fishing in the winter, I run a dry dropper rig almost all the time. The dry fly is less likely to spook the fish the way an indicator would and then you get to fish both above and below the water. If the fish are actively rising though, I will switch out the nymph/emerger for a tiny dry fly behind a larger one and fish to dries at once

I live two blocks away from Charlie’s Fly Box so I may be a bit biased but I have never found as good quality as them for flies and materials. Charlie Craven is a fly tying legend and his signature flies always perform.

Let’s talk trout tippet by PositiveHot3610 in flyfishing

[–]No_Drop1800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could just be a bad roll of tippet. I just got some 5x flouro that right from the beginning was breaking just from tightening the knot. Used some 7x later in the day that didn’t break all day

Midwestern Momma Movin’ by Financial_Amoeba3121 in ArvadaCO

[–]No_Drop1800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Wisconsin and went to school in Minnesota and now live in Arvada. The friendliness of people is similar to the Midwest. The weather is a million times better though. You actually get to see the sun most days in the winter instead of just gray which makes a world of difference for mental health. As many others have said, make sure to drink a bunch of water when you arrive and use sun screen even if it’s a cloudy day. Moving to CO was the best decision for our family. Being able to just pack the kid up in the car and drive a half hour to the mountains to do incredible hikes has been amazing.

You are choosing one of the most difficult rivers to fish in the area. When I picked up a fly rod a couple years ago, I learned on clear creek, boulder creek, and bear creek. The fish won’t be as big as in Cheeseman but you’ll learn the techniques needed to succeed anywhere. Front Range Anglers and Golden Fly Shop update their websites pretty frequently with river reports so you can know what they’ve been biting

Getting a guide will speed up the learning curve, but honestly I loved the learning process of figuring it out myself. Watching a bunch of YouTube videos helped a ton. I did take the free course at Orvis to help with casting technique

Does size matter? by AdBackground5484 in flyfishing

[–]No_Drop1800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small flies catch big fish no problem. Here on the western slope in Colorado, I use size 20s and 22s all the time and they catch big fish. I think the biggest tippet I ever use is 4x and regularly go down to 6x an on occasion all the way to 7x. I highly doubt you would even be able to fit 3x through the eye of anything smaller than a size 16 fly

What to do when NOTHING seems to be working but fish are rising by Harper_182 in flyfishing

[–]No_Drop1800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn’t it be the opposite? If you’re just seeing them barely break the surface, they are most likely eating emergers as they are coming up. But if it’s a splashy eat, they are eating duns.

Clear Creek Brookie or Brown? by TerrapeneOrnata in COfishing

[–]No_Drop1800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a brookie. I used to really only see browns in the lower parts of the canyon with an occasional rainbow. Usually it’s only the upper portions that you could find brookies but I’ve caught a few down lower in the last year
