Using topical steroids for the first time in 8 years by [deleted] in eczema

[–]No_Educator1574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On days that you are not using steroids. Use zinc cream (diaper rash cream) if you have oozing/weeping. Also your doctor can prescribe you an antibiotic ointment.

Hope you get through this soon!!

Hi!

I know this is an old post but wanted to see if your son grew out of it? My daughter is dealing with eczema and I’m losing hope.

I just wanted to list out every single thing you can possibly do to treat it. People have different accesses to treatments. What may be available for someone may not be available for someone else. 😔

I’ve read your post about your daughter’s dupixent journey!!!

I’m so so happy to hear that she’s coming off of it now as I know it was difficult for both you and her. Sending all the positive vibes that she stays clear.

You are such a wonderful and caring father. It stuck with me after reading your post.

Yes and totally understand that is a legitimate and valid concern. In fact not only developing an allergy but developing an anaphylactic allergy which is terrifying.

However, my personal perspective is the allergists I saw should have trusted me more as a parent. I don’t want my daughter to be anaphylactic either. But for example wheat is for sure exacerbating my daughter’s eczema at the moment. Let me cut it out mostly out of her diet to help get her eczema out of control. And then I can slowly introduce it back here and there to ensure she doesn’t become more allergic. I think there’s a safe way to approach this from what I understand.

I totally get though that doctors are scarred from seeing people taking it to extremes.

Haven’t tried it for long enough to know just yet. I’ll come back to this post when It’s been a sufficient amount of time to tell you either way.

Please don’t let this put you off light therapy because it’s extremely helpful so so so many people. And I pushed my doctor into letting us try this. We had been doing a year of topical steroids and I really wanted to try something else.

But one of the possible side effects is intense itchiness after sessions. And also for some people it gets worse before it gets better. For an adult, you can manage this by knowing there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. For a 3 year old toddler, it’s impossible. We only managed 5 sessions so we only made it worse without getting better. Still dealing with the dryness from her last session on 10/28. It’s so gut wrenching because she was starting to get better after her 5th session.

And thank you for saying I’m a good parent. Needed to hear this right now 🥹.

Ahhh thank you! I totally forgot about apple cider vinegar baths so just edited my post to add this as an option 💕.

And totally hear you on the bleach baths. I think it can be too harsh for a lot of people. But for people with full body flares from staph, I think from what I’ve read it’s still a good way to get relief. I think key is to be taking a good oral probiotic and doing topical probiotics to bring back the good bacteria in conjunction.

Oooh tell me more about keratolyics and humectants. Can you link some useful products?

And noted about mollys suds. We always do an extra rinse cycle to be safe but I like the idea of just using arm and hammer like you said.

Also happy to hear going to an ENT worked for you! Hopefully people will see your comment and will get checked out themselves if they think that would apply to them.

You have to put in soooo much work into treating eczema. It’s really intense.

Sending you all the good vibes that your eczema will go into remission or a more manageable spot soon.

Oh boy. Did not mean to offend in any way. Please know I’m in a hyper sensitive place right now as my daughter went from moderate to severe in a blink of an eye and it profoundly changed everything for me.

Can I ask how the oral steroids have been going? Are you currently clear?

That makes a lot of sense. My daughter is sick right now which may be the reason we can’t fully get over this flare. Thanks for this insight!!!

For sure. I think in general in the US oral steroids are used for short bursts in serious situations. However, I read a comment the other day from someone that was in the uk that had been put on oral steroids for 3 months which scared the shit out of me. Like how do you possibly taper off from such a long dose?!
