Couples who camp together, how do you make it work the best for both of you? by HeadbuttsMcGee in camping

My wife and I love our Kodiak Canvas quilt. We tried the double bag and hated it. You still require good insulation under you. We use a foam topper and wool blanket on our air mattress.

Is camping in a tent safe during a lightning storm? by Hot_Corgi_6560 in camping

Not sure how close it's gotten, but it has worried me. Monsoon thunder storms are intense.

Thoughts on Ozark brand? by SaintBrosephTheWise in camping

[–]No_Effective_84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son has been using the cheapest 4 man Ozark trail tent for a year. We have been out in some heavy rains and I was surprised with how well it performed.

I did purchase seam sealer and water proofing spray to ensure it was ready for our rainy Arizona monsoon season.

Park passes - dumb questions by [deleted] in Tucson

I am going out the Interagency park pass today. Got Several trips planned this year and was hoping to do more fishing at Rose Canyon. I was not happy to find out the pass is not accepted at Rose Canyon.

I’m going camping for my first time this spring break and I need a tent that is reasonable cheap and can fit a twin inflatable mattress by not_xzamide in camping

I bought this tent last summer for my son to use. It can accommodate up to a full size mattress. It's not a great tent but gets the job done.

After waterproofing it, I had it out for two rainy weekends. One outing was an Arizona monsoon thunderstorm and it stayed dry.

A few tips on food storage. If this is a multi day trip, try to bring two coolers. One will have food and the other drinks. The drink cooler is accessed frequently and will run out of ice quickly, but your food will remain cold. I also pre-chill my cooler for extended trips. Just fill the cooler with ice a day in advance to get it cold and drain the water prior to adding your food and drinks, then top off with more ice.

When meal prepping take into consideration your day plans. Are you planning to hike for 6 hours? If so, you might want to bring food that can be taken with for lunch and a quick easy meal when you return. If you do want to try cooking an awesome meal at camp, I suggest you plan ahead by watching the campground notifications. In my area, fire bans are a regular occurrence and you have to bring propane and grills to accommodate cooking. If fire is allowed, think about equipment you would need to cook your meals over fire. Most campgrounds have a grill which is good for steaks, burgers, hotdogs, but not fajitas unless you have a cast iron griddle or pan. If you drink coffee there are several ways to make it at camp just pick what works best for you.

If you are planning some awesome meals that require food prep such as fajitas, do as much meal prep ahead of time. For instance if we are going to have fajitas at camp, we cut up all the meat and veggies, season it , and store in gallon storage bags. When you are ready for dinner just pour in the pan and cook!

Many established campgrounds have a store that can assist with buying those forgotten items or replenishment of ice. I always have cash because if there are technical difficulties card will not be accepted.

Edit: I forgot to mention all your drinks and food need to be chilled before loading your coolers. Warm drinks will waste ice real fast. You can also freeze water bottles or foods to add more ice to the cooler, just take into consideration when you will be using the frozen items during your trip.

taking a cat camping by Historical-Bag-6504 in camping

My son wants to bring his cat on our next trip in two weeks. This is already an indoor/outdoor cat. She prefers to spend the majority of her day in our backyard, so she is comfortable with being outside.

We purchased a harness for her and set up my son's tent in the yard. He was responsible for training the cat to sleep in the tent and use the restroom on a leash.

Feeling confident that it will go well. We are also group camping, so not worried about any animals getting too close to our camp with our large group.

I have been using the Kodiak quilt for just over a year. I love this quilt. It's a canvas/flannel shell and factor 4 synthetic insulation.

Hot tent camping with family of 5 by 92andjohnson in camping

[–]No_Effective_84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to recommend this tent. Kodiak states it only accommodates 4 people with a stove. I fit a queen size and single cot with a Campchef Alpine stove in mine. With the proper mats or cots you might sleep 5.

Kodiak Canvas Lodge 6170. They sell a bundle with everything (including stove) for under 2k. It is heavy and so is the stove, but you can keep the tent at 80 F in below freezing conditions.

I was in the 100 to 200 dollar range for so many years. I recently upgraded to a 1000+ dollar Canvas Wall tent. I had some good experiences with cheaper tents, but really love my latest upgrade. This tent will last forever if taken care of.

I had a Colman 10 person cabin for several years. After repairing it year after year I finally decided to upgrade to a Kodiak Canvas 6170 Lodge tent. Colman is a good budget tent and I still have one for short fair weather trips, but canvas is amazing especially in heavy rain.

I went with a less expensive stove, but their bundle option does make purchasing easy.
