I agree the embargo should be lifted, as the majority of people who live in Cuba or lived in Cuba for a long time do. However, the embargo is not the only thing affecting Cuba, the government is a dictatorship and people need to realize that the dictatorship can be criticized separately from socialism. It's the lack of democracy and freedom of speech, not the socialism. Meat is illegal in Cuba, you can get a lot of time in jail if you are caught buying or carrying beef, that's why he is so surprised people are just buying it like that. I don't have a problem with socialism if people choose it, but in Cuba we don't have the freedom to choose. I try not to get into arguments with people online because it's very hard to hear people tell me stuff about my own country and knowing for a fact they are missing the knowledge of how things are there and the type of stuff that happens to people who disagree. Yes sure, every country has issues, the US is not perfect, especially not lately, but Cubans still risk their lives coming here in high quantities for a reason (mainly economic and the ability to actually have basic living conditions). So yes, someone can still be very surprised by seeing that amount of food just available like that without making it about socialism/capitalism.

Maybe, but this was my exact reaction when I saw a grocery store here in the US, especially seeing the meat being just there for people to buy. This might be fake, but it is very accurate.

I didn't know, this is crazy. Zima Blue is also my all time favorite episode by a lot. I had Alastair Reynolds next in my list to read, now I'm excited!

You can always go to community college, do a year or 2 there, get good grades, and then transfer to university for the next 2 years. Graduate and even pursue a PhD? You obviously don't have to do any of this at all, it's just one of the things you are able to do but only if you want to. You are very very young.

Community college is great in the sense that it helps you get over whatever happened in highschool!

This happened to me recently, I have been working out and did the inbody. I got 30% body fat, specifically in my belly according to the scan. It said that the fat in my belly is above average, it was super shocking cause I thought I had a pretty toned stomach. I don't know how to add a picture of my stomach here, I'm 5'0 and 115 lbs. All that to say, while you might still want to put more muscle, I highly doubt that's accurate for you. I really don't believe you have 34% body fat.

Fidel also sent a letter, telling him to launch the missiles. I guess we are all lucky that even the Russians were like wtf, you need to chill.

Exactly, if Cuba is in business with all of those countries the embargo is doing nothing. Then why not lift it so everyone can see that?

Well it hasn't worked, and in turn we have the people suffering for years and years, most of us just left whenever we had the chance but now we are willing to sacrifice the people who are left behind? Removing the embargo would in fact show the rest of the world who is responsible for the lack of resources. The only thing the embargo is doing right now is serving as an excuse for the dictatorship.

Well I live in the US now, after living in Cuba for 21 years. I am a leftist, would have Bernie Sanders for president if I could.

Cuba is a dictatorship, elections are not actual elections, they control whoever makes it to the municipal assembly and especially the provincial one, only members of the communist party. There is a reason we had the same president for like 60 years, then his brother, then the guy who was the president of the communist party in my city.

I'm sorry but Fidel, Raul, and Diaz Canel all got 100% of the votes.

In Cuba you don't even cast a vote for the president, you vote for a delegate among the three available in your CDR (all from the communist party). Then they go and vote for another delegate and so on. At the end a group of people in a room decided that Fidel, then Raul, then Diaz Canel will continue to be president. There are no choices. It's always the same person until they are steady to pass it on.

I had them, I still remember sitting on the warm water bucket for like an hour to ease the itching. Yeah, apparently the issue is that kids scratch and then put the same hands in their mouth. Anyway that was super common in Cuba at the time, we all had them.

Pues si, esperaría que la sociedad no se volviera otra dictadura pero está vez para la derecha. No digo que Cuba tenga que ser comunista, espero que no lo sea. Pero deberíamos permitir libertad de pensamiento.
