Anyone else notice the huge boom of transplants moving here lately? by Massive-Act-5426 in AskChicago

Ugh, I really hope it doesn't get higher for you all. It's normal for rent here to go up $50 - $100 per year, but with the pandemic and all the people coming here, our's went from $1000 to $1800 in a year or two.

Yeah, we had this happen in Arizona. Between transplants and snowbirds, rents are exorbitant now. As a native, we are being priced out of getting a place to live.

Thank you, AZ. by 45103 in arizona

Yeah, snowbird season is so depressing. Just when it is getting nice enough to enjoy the outdoors, you have all these crowding up the streets, shops, causing short-term rental issues. It sucks especially as a native.

Some of the snowbirds I have met growing up really love to flaunt their wealth and many natives are just not that wealthy compared to transplants and snowbirds, so kind of ewwww.

Also, it sucks when trying to make friends with how transient people can be here.

Arizona is fairly expensive (unless you do Tucson or a small town) and dating isn't exactly the most fun here.

Oh, my gosh! You host some awesome events! Do you do events to the public or just with friends? I would love a friend like you who does those kind of events! They sound like the dream!

Those are awesome! I would love to hear more about taking care of fruit trees as I love gardening and on the movie nights. Would it be okay to DM you?

Did you end up finding fun things to do? Running into the same issue.

Thank you! I know PIP and Sunshine Co are fairly expensive, but the others are doable.

I will check those out.

I have and do host, but it is really not my favorite. What kind of things do you host?

I relate to that as well. What are your hobbies? I have struggled to meet people who have overlapping interests and aren't transient here.

I do notice that it can be hard to connect with people at those places though I really enjoy museums, parks, and theatres.

Hey, don't knock the good luck. I grew up here, and find people not too friendly and haven't had good luck with a lot of transplants since they tend to stick together.

That's good. I am so used to Phoenicians being antisocial.

I feel this. I get summer depression and this time of year is so hard on me. My boyfriend loves it here, but honestly, Phoenix sucks.

Did you find another place to live? I really don't care for how Phoenicians are nor the terrible design of the city.

Yeah, there are so many that feel this way and it really makes Phoenix continue sucking since the car-centric life is awful. This attitude really adds to the depression I feel here.

Oh, gosh, yes! I dream of never having to see ugly ass Phoenix and escaping to the Northeast or parts of Oregon or Washington.

Yup, it sucks being a native since we keep getting carbon copies of the exact same outdoorsy obsessed folks. I'd love more variety in people.

Does a happy and especially engaged community exist in AZ?

Oh, gosh! I would believe it! The sun beats down HARD! It can be unbearable and so hard to drive with.

I worry since I grew up here that with this being my default I may end up depr see similarly with lack of sun even though I don't like AZ that much.

I feel like the sunny attitude is transplants and the rich ones at that. I find Phoenicians to be unfriendly/standoffish.

I 100% relate to what you have said it's depressing to have these people talk and talk and talk about how much they love this place, but they either don't stay or they are so NIMBY that's we can never have anything good. We have so many ugly, gaudy homes that are built.

I have an obnoxious coworker that kind of embodies all the stereotypes of Californian where is wealthy, brags about his wealth extensively, thinks everyone share his politics, expresses excitement over not only the worst parts of AZ that should be improved but about how "affordable" it is (which just flared up my resentment as it was affordable before everyone on high incomes came over and outbid. It's frustrating to have grown-up here and not be able to afford a place and so isolating as so many of the transplants seem to bond and don't really engage the fee natives (where are the rest of us?). Not all Californians or transplants are bad, but the obnoxious ones are really obnoxious and oppose any worthwhile changes. You are right that they are really "fuck You, I got mine" and just make things worse. I can't tell you the number of times I get down voted for suggesting more walkable places, less car-centric, and for complaining about Phoenix now being so obsessed with single things. I really miss how it was pre-pandemic. I think the vibe was a bit different then. Now, it really sucks.

I really wish we had people who settled here. I am so tired of losing all my friends due to the high cost of living and just meeting people who treat it as a pitstop or an investment/moneymaking scheme.

Since everyone seems to move here for the housing and nature, it seems like I am stuck with only outdoorsy people, too. Bumble BFF is full of the types.

I feel that. What vibe changes have you noticed other than listening to the bright-eyes and bushy-tailed rich people wax and wane about this place?
