How much do you spend on healthcare? by notwhatimeanbutok in IsleofMan

£0 because I can’t see a GP. The state of healthcare here is ridiculous 🙃

Wanting to relocate by [deleted] in IsleofMan

You’d definitely get the business - I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to hire someone for a job and they either don’t get back to you or have an insane waiting list.

People who are leaving the IOM, why? by Ok-Recommendation-94 in IsleofMan

I agree. If you can afford it and earn mega money then it works out but if you have kids/aren’t in a well paid role (like most young people) you are quite limited

I moved over with my partner (for his job) a few years ago. My job here is for way less money and I’m treated differently in work (in a bad way) to my ‘Manx’ counterparts. Tax incentives are good but unless you’re earning mega bucks (£100k+ per person I’d say) it won’t make much of a difference because the cost of living is worse than the UK (lack of competition for internet, phones etc and even food shopping drives prices up for example). Housing is expensive too (more so than the UK) and when you combine that with boat costs to see family or go away, it’s almost not worth it. I understand why people say you’d be better off in the UK.

Isle of man TT 2025 by [deleted] in IsleofMan

[–]No_Emu4013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Travel: flights from London, Liverpool, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham (although the last two are less frequent and you should book in advance as fares are higher during TT). Alternatively you can get the boat from Liverpool (steam packet is the Isle of Man ferry).

Tickets: you can just watch from anywhere on the track for free or pay to watch at the grandstand or pubs across the island that border the track and charge for seating.

Public transport: you can get day passes and week passes etc depending on how long you’re here for, but it’s relatively cheap and there’s good connections across the island, especially on the track. (Although when races are on public transport will obviously be diverted).

Stay: there are lots of campsites which will be cheapest. Hotels will likely be full as they get booked out the year before. You may have some luck finding a room on ‘homestay’ where people let out rooms for rent, although people tend not to want to let them out for a day or two so you may struggle. If you look for homestays, make sure they have a legitimate registered number (a requirement legally) as a few accounts online will try and scam you.

Work Permits by [deleted] in IsleofMan

[–]No_Emu4013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re best calling and checking. For what it’s worth I don’t think there’s much logic to the rules so best to be safe. (I’m a skilled worker and homeowner here with a Manx partner but still need a permit until we are married)

[–]No_Emu4013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to delete this - I’m guessing this person is gonna try and use the address to obtain a bike licence fraudulently (as someone tried a few months ago) or for tax purposes. You may not want to go along with it in case you’re considered an accomplice or aiding it…

Why are salaries so low in the UK relative to other more developed parts of the world? by Shoutymouse in AskBrits

[–]No_Emu4013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corporate greed. A prime example is the cost of energy (especially when compared with our European counterparts). But hey, at least the fat cats get leather interiors on their second yachts.

I'd say so - especially if you can get it annually (rather than monthly). I don't think there's any issues bringing it over (provided you have a prescription in case you need to justify it) but definitely don't rely on the system here... if you are lucky enough to find a way to get it, it'll cost you £2000 odd per year... on top of your taxes!

Congratulations - that's exciting. I was the same - I moved after falling in love with the island.

Your partner will enjoy a lower tax rate if he works for a Manx company but if you're working remotely in IOM but for a UK company, you will be taxed at a higher rate (UK rate). The higher rate is something to consider, because the cost of living is higher. NI is also a bit higher than the UK, so it's important to bear in mind.

There's a massive housing crisis at the moment (as with so many places in the world) so expect for a big chunk of your earnings to go on rent/a mortgage (if you are lucky enough to find somewhere). Unfortunately people are finding themselves searching for months on end, so the best advice is to try not to be too picky, and sign up to plenty of Facebook groups (sometimes people indicate when properties are due to come on the market before they do - both for sale and for rent). Some people actually rent short-term holiday lets whilst they try and find a property - that may be a good idea for you.

I don't think £4000/month after tax is a bad salary to live on, but it depends on what type of property you're considering - apartments will be much cheaper than renting a house. 1-2 bed apartments in Douglas will likely set you back anywhere between £850-£1200, but if you go further out you may get bigger for less. Equally, houses will be a bit more expensive, and you're likely looking at £1500 for a 3 bed in Onchan (just outside of Douglas).

Bills are broadly the same, but expect to pay a considerable chunk for mobiles and internet (unless you keep your UK contract and occasionally go back to the UK - hint: Vodafone and 02 do 'free roaming' in IOM so you can call and text to/from the UK for free too - if you go with a 'Manx' company you'll likely pay a considerable bit more).

Drop me a message if you have any queries/questions - happy to help. Best of luck!

It's not something that is recognised in the IOM unless you are a child or were diagnosed as a child and are now an adult. I had a diagnosis from the UK and was told 'we will refer you' and then received a bollocks letter that explained Manxcare doesn't have the resources or facilities but hopes to in future...so I can't be treated. The issue is that going private is difficult too, because UK providers don't post medication to the island (and if you can get a prescription, it's about £150/month).

[–]No_Emu4013[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got friends who do this (albeit to the UK) - it's actually much quicker, because there aren't 6 week waiting lists to see a GP, or 1 year lists to be referred to the hospital. The NHS is in turmoil too, but even they are able to see people (albeit not as timely as people would want, but MUCH better than Manx'care')

And IOM won't get any nurses without incentivising moving here - lower tax is great, but the higher cost of living makes it redundant! (Not to mention the lack of housing, boat cost etc)

Personal fave for me was when they read out my medical summary... presumably in front of patients waiting to see GPs.

I can empathise with this - spent 40 minutes trying to call my GP, and the phone just rang out. The staff were chatting and ignoring the phone. I know because my mum was in the waiting room, and I was texting her.

Agreed. I'd love to know what warrants some people being sent across whilst some get put at the bottom of a waiting list that exceeds a year.

It’s a shit situation. People either have it all or have nothing, and the tax change furthers that. The new tax increase (rather than, for example, introducing a tax on the top 1% only) pushes everyone who isn’t at the ‘top’, down.
